Apple today released a new update for Safari Technology Preview, the experimental browser Apple first introduced in March 2016. Apple designed the Safari Technology Preview to test features that may be introduced into future release versions of Safari.

Safari Technology Preview release 172 includes bug fixes and performance improvements for Web Inspector, CSS, Image Set, Rendering, Editing, JavaScript, Media, Popover, SVG, Accessibility, HTML, IndexedDB, and Web API.

The current Safari Technology Preview release is version 16.4 and is compatible with machines running macOS Ventura.

The Safari Technology Preview update is available through the Software Update mechanism in System Preferences or System Settings to anyone who has downloaded the browser. Full release notes for the update are available on the Safari Technology Preview website.

Apple's aim with Safari Technology Preview is to gather feedback from developers and users on its browser development process. Safari Technology Preview can run side-by-side with the existing Safari browser and while designed for developers, it does not require a developer account to download.

Is that version that's stated (16.4) a typo? I'm on Monterey and my safari is Version 16.5 (17615.2.9.11.6, 17615)

Ugh, the spacing for the Favorites Bar makes it look like total trash.

Not seeing any way to make it more compact. Quality UI changes as always Apple, thanks!

No macOS Sonoma yet. Safari works without issues though so not a prob

And yes I do know that web sites that to weird crap with video codecs, like crunchyroll don’t work according to some (I don’t use crunchyroll). But seems like that burden is on the websites not using standard stuff

I always skip over these articles but decided to read and get a better understanding. So, its basically like Edge, Firefox and Chrome on the bleeding edge.

No. It's more feature complete and stable.

172 Release Notes:

What's missing is JPEGXL as the decoder hasn't reached test status for external testing.

You can run Preview 172 on this page and see the JPEGXL doesn't decode.

Web apps are useless to me since they don’t support adblockers currently and anyone not using an adblocker needs help ha.

17.0, but it doesn't seem to have any of the Sonoma features

There is a difference I noticed in the Extensions section of settings. Now, extensions have a box you have to check if you want them to run in Private. That was off on my adblocker (Wipr). I noticed it wasn't working in private so I went to check it out and I had to turn it on. I'm not sure if that's something new for Sonoma but that was not there in STP 171.
