Apple today released a new update for Safari Technology Preview, the experimental browser Apple first introduced in March 2016. Apple designed the Safari Technology Preview to test features that may be introduced into future release versions of Safari.

Safari Technology Preview 192 includes fixes and updates for Authentication, CSS, Editing, JavaScript, Media, Rendering, Web API, and Web Extensions.

The current Safari Technology Preview release is compatible with machines running macOS Ventura and macOS Sonoma, the latest version of macOS that Apple released in September 2023.

The Safari Technology Preview update is available through the Software Update mechanism in System Preferences or System Settings to anyone who has downloaded the browser. Full release notes for the update are available on the Safari Technology Preview website.

Apple's aim with Safari Technology Preview is to gather feedback from developers and users on its browser development process. Safari Technology Preview can run side-by-side with the existing Safari browser and while designed for developers, it does not require a developer account to download.

I tried to update it through Soft.Update , it was downloaded but didn't install it.
Then I downloaded it from Software developer and from there it was successful.
Ventura 13.6.6

"and Performance Improvements"

Sooooo...at long last, it's the most snappiest Safari we've ever created. You're going to love it

Are they going to fix the Safari issue where networking just stops working randomly, or links stop being clickable (I have no extensions)? Has been there for a few OS releases, I have stopped using Safari and gone to Chromium browsers because of that, this is like browser job #1, to open web pages and allow clicking on links.

I know I am not alone in this, they talked about it on the Apple fanboy podcast (Accidental Tech Podcast) too.

Mofos need to put some of those trillions to work developing basic features and fixing bugs instead of running around like headless chickens chasing the hype cycle (AR/VR, AI, blah blah).

I've stopped reporting bugs to Apple as well, no feedback, it's like shouting into the void, never know if they are looking into it, planning to do anything about it, etc.

Few more scored from a M1 24" iMac running MacOS 14.5 beta
Safari Version 17.5 (19618.2.4.11.2) = 26.7
Brave Version 1.64.116 Chromium: 123.0.6312.105 (Official Build) (arm64) = 24.4
Firefox Version 124.0.2 = 26.4

I was surprised that latest Firefox was as fast w/speedometer3

This just reminds me that my iMac is getting on a bit - my highest was 7.6 on Firefox!
(and the lowest being 3.25 for Safari 17.4.1)

From my M1 Macbook Pro also running 14.5b1:

Safari Technology Preview 192: 28.4
Safari 17.5 (19618.2.4.11.2): 26.0
DuckDuckGo 1.82.1: 21.5
Firefox 124.0.2: 25.4
Arc 1.37.0: 25.5

I was very surprised as this feature wasn't listed on caniuse for Safari before. Awesome.
It's quite new, so not that surprising. Other new features I'm eagerly awaiting for are scroll-driven animations and container style queries.

Of interest

With all these optimizations and dozens more, we were able to improve the overall Speedometer 3.0 score by ~60% between Safari 17.0 and Safari 17.4. Even though individual progressions were often less than 1%, over time, they all stacked up together to make a big difference. Because some of these optimizations also benefited Speedometer 2.1, Safari 17.4 is also ~13% faster than Safari 17.0 on Speedometer 2.1.

MBP 16" M3 Max, High Performance Mode, Plugged into power, 128GB Ram, MacOS 14.4.1

Safari Tech Preview 37.4
Safari 36.4
Chrome 35.1

Ran a couple of times, scores vary slightly depending on the run.

I only had this issue when private relay was turned on and/or when hide IP address from trackers is turned on (in conjunction with my home DNS server/pi-hole ad block). Safari would hang at random, as if it couldn't resolve the DNS. It happened frequently, at weird times not all the time, and I think only a reboot solved it again temporarily.

I turned these off, and I have no issues with Safari. But it was a big problem for me also, maybe a year ago.

for me safari update gives me 36.3 via speedometer where other browsers give me 28.2
