Apple today seeded the third betas of upcoming iOS 16.2 and iPadOS 16.2 updates to public beta testers, providing the software to the general public. Today's beta comes one week after Apple released the second public betas.

Public beta testers who have signed up for Apple's free beta testing program can download the ‌iOS and iPadOS 16.‌2 betas over the air after installing the proper certificate from the Public Beta website.

iOS 16.2 and iPadOS 16.2 introduce the Freeform app, which can be used for jotting down notes, sketching, drawing, brainstorming ideas, creating mood boards, and more. Multiple people can work on the same Freeform board, with changes synced for all participants in real time.

For the iPad, the update brings external display support to the Stage Manager multitasking feature, allowing up to eight apps to be used at once. External display support is available for the M1 and M2 iPad models.

There is a new Home app architecture coming in iOS and iPadOS 16.2, which Apple says is designed to bring faster, more reliable performance, especially in homes with a lot of smart home accessories. The new architecture requires the HomePod 16.2 beta software, and it causes the Home app not to work with devices updated to iOS 16.2, iPadOS 16.2, or macOS Ventura 13.1.

Unintentional Emergency SOS calls can be reported to Apple in iOS 16.2, and the latest beta added options to turn off notifications and wallpaper when using always on display on the iPhone 14 Pro models. There are several other changes that can be found in our iOS 16.2 feature guide.

Is this a typo? If you update HomePod to 16.2 beta, it breaks compatibility on your other devices that are also on 16.2 beta?

Not so impressed by Home app since iOS16. Automations not working properly since the update.

I eperimented with Home, just to see what it was about. Got everything set up the way it was supoosed to be. It was OK, though no where near as functional... or intuitive as Alexa.

Then some update broke EVERYTHING in Home. Total waste of time.

Public release non-beta is imminent. Sweet!
Why would you say that?

I hope you're right, but Apple has said it's coming in December, probably in 2nd or 3rd week. And the current build is an "e" build. Probably one or two more builds before RC.

Why would the app no longer work correctly on non-iOS 16.2 devices? Peculiar...
Because it’s a brand new architecture.
From what I understand it’s completely rewritten from the ground up.
When you update to 16.2 and open the Home app, you’re presented with a screen to install the new architecture on your devices.
Since you can’t install the new architecture on the older versions of any of Apple‘s operating systems, you have to have everything up-to-date and on the new architecture.

Is it possible in iPadOS 16.2 to extend (not mirror) the iPad Pro M1 to two (not one like in the image) external screens, e.g. with a Thunderbolt 3 / USB-C to 2x HDMI Adapter?

Uh. What could possibly be installed on my light switches or smart plugs that have no write-ability to them?

Is this a charging pad? If so does anyone know the make? I can't quite read what it says there, but I like the style.

I've noticed that the battery life of my 12PM is *way* better since 16.2 beta2 and now it seems like 16.2 beta3 might no alter that. So much happier than when 16.1 was draining it like a drunk at 1:30AM.

I think you misunderstand, all of your *Apple* devices have to be updated to the latest home architecture.
IE: your iPhone has to be on 16.2, your iPad has to be on 16.2, your Mac on 13.1, your HomePods on 16.2, and your Apple TV on 16.2.
There is no cross compatibility with, say, the iOS 16.2 home app and the macOS 12.7 home app.
Just like how you have to be updated to iOS 16 on everything for the new iMessage features to work properly.

But that's not true, is it? I updated to iOS 16 on my iPhone way before upgrading on my iPad, and the new features worked perfectly (like unsend etc etc). They didn't obviously display correctly on my iPad when I unsent/edited a text, but it's not like I couldn't use Messages at all. Worked fine. Bottom line: I feel like the updated Home app should work with the new features on the updated iOS device, and those (just the) new features won't be visible on the other devices, but... heck... what do I know?

Kudos, Apple, with the beta 3 of 16.2. True extended display — as opposed to the limiting mirror — using external monitor with iPad Pro 2022.
