Apple today released tvOS 18.1, the newest version of the tvOS 18 operating system that came out in September. tvOS 18.1 comes over a month after Apple released tvOS 18, and it is available for the Apple TV 4K and the Apple TV HD models.

tvOS 18.1 can be downloaded using the Settings app on the ‌Apple TV‌. Open up Settings and go to System > Software Update to get the new software. ‌Apple TV‌ owners who have automatic software updates activated will be upgraded to tvOS 18.1 automatically.

tvOS updates are often minor in scale, and tvOS 18.1 doesn't seem to be an exception.

Apple still hasn't added the 21:9 aspect ratio for projectors or the new Snoopy screensavers that it promised at WWDC, but those features were not in tvOS 18.1 during the beta testing process, and we don't know what's new.

Apple shares release notes for tvOS in its tvOS support document, which is updated after each new version of tvOS comes out, so that should give us some insight into what's included in tvOS 18.1.

I don’t see anything about bitstreaming / audio passthrough on the linked page….😿

I really hope that tvOS 18.1 fixes the annoying issue where audio drops out for a few seconds during streaming.

Just as I am contemplating to switch mom over to an AppleTV, this would come right in the nick of time—I would be embarrassed to do it with current audio issues.

Considering I have an Android phone, should I think about getting something like the NVidia? These features look nice and I wish Apple did more with TVOS. Their best product is the Apple TV but it seems like they don't care about keeping up with the times.

Interesting. 16 PM just upgraded to 18.1 now it magically can't see my Apple TV that has already controlled it before.
UPDATE: Somehow it dropped my wifi network so after I logged in, it downloaded fine.

It does not. Switching the audio from auto to 5.1 was/is the only fix for me.

You are very much mistaken in many ways. Check out the list of things that can be played on Apple TV 4K.
4K HDR/DV ready.
HD Audio ready.
Youtube HDR ready.
BluRay/DVD structure ready.
Upscaling ready.
And more :)

It does seem to have fixed a really annoying issue with HomePod stereo pair that was introduced in 18.0. The issue was the stereo pair would break and audio would only come out of one channel.

Update: actually I'm not sure it has fixed it. If anyone else is experiencing this issue, one workaround is to ungroup the HomePods and select both of them as temporary audio output from the Apple TV.

UPDATE: So far, so good - after I upgraded to tvOS 18.1 a few hours ago. 🤞🏻

UPDATE 2024-11-04: audio drops continue with 18.1; I'll check to see if it is only with my Xfinity Stream app, which I am beginning to suspect may be the root of the issue. It's a flaky app anyways, Xfinity doesn't even include the mini-guide for we Apple users.

Anyone else not able to download apps since they have downloaded this update?

I can’t seem to download anything and have been continually told that it is a network connection problem or to reset my Apple TV 4K. I have tried all of this and have a strong internet connection. Everything still streams great and fast so it is not an internet issue. Just at a loss and having to airplay in is more of a hassle when they have an app.
