Apple today released tvOS 18.2, the newest version of the tvOS 18 operating system that came out in September. tvOS 18.2 comes more than a month after Apple released tvOS 18.1, and it is available for the Apple TV 4K and the Apple TV HD models.

tvOS 18.2 can be downloaded using the Settings app on the ‌Apple TV‌. Open up Settings and go to System > Software Update to get the new software. ‌Apple TV‌ owners who have automatic software updates activated will be upgraded to tvOS 18.2 automatically.

tvOS 18.2 adds a selection of new Snoopy screen savers that are available as an alternative to the aerial, memory, and portrait screen saver options, plus it includes natural language search support for Siri for looking for movies, music, and TV shows.

The update also includes an option that lets the Apple TV automatically detect the best aspect ratio for a television or projector, along with new aspect ratios for projectors. Options include 16:9, 21:9, 2.37:1, 2.39:1, 2.40:1, DCI 4K, and 32:9.

Apple shares full release notes for tvOS in its tvOS support document, which is updated after each new version of tvOS comes out.

The Apple TV hasn't been updated in more than 2 years now.

For owners of the current one: what changes would you like to see on a new model? What would make it a instant buy?

I'm asking because I'm actually considering buying a current model. I'm reading rumors on new AI features. But even after today's expanded language support, Apple Intelligence still isn't available here in The Netherlands. And honestly, judging by the use case of current features, I don't think I'm missing much. So if that is going to be the big selling point of the new Apple TV, I might just get the current model.

Supposedly the projector support at 21:9 constant image requires use of an anamorphic lens, which most people don’t use due to cost. I have a scope screen and use lens memory and zoom to accommodate the 21:9 formatted screen. This feature is essentially not worth it unless the output contains letterboxing or black bars on the top/bottom of the image. Hope apple corrects this for this use case.

In the same boat. Still have an original ATV 4K and want to upgrade but also unsure when the long overdue model is coming.

Would like to see IMAX Enhanced support and a faster processor for more serious gaming. If the hardware isn’t there, developers won’t create those games. It’s time to give them a platform. No reason that ATV couldn’t handle an M4 when the Mini with almost the same form factor can. Sure, it would cost more, and I wouldn’t mind paying the M-premium.

120hz output so we have an even amount of held frames for 24fps, 30fps, 60fps. This would help produce the clearest image. No need to "match frame rate or depth" anymore. With all the annoyances that comes with. Far too long screen time outs from HDMI handshake changes. Screen lockups from bad HDMI handshakes.

Currently I use my ATV in Dolby Vision 4k 60 with all MATCHING turned off. This way I have a fluid smooth operation of everything. The TV never has to handshake. Of course 24fps playing in a 60fps container might cause an issue to those most sensitive to it. And no, it's not the soap-opera effect. It would be the potential for visible frame judder from the uneven frame doubling. 120hz solves all this. (well and you need a TV that can handle 120)

I think that a new Apple Tv is seriously on the back burner over at Apple. My feeling is the Apple Tv team members have been sent off to various other projects to help with Vision Pro, the new Homepods with a screen, and perhaps that Home Kit device, if that is something completely different than the Homepod project. Probably explains why these Snoopy Screen savers literally took so long to finally be implemented.

Hopefully this restores the speed of the Apple TV, 18.1 slowed down dramatically

Couldn’t figure out why I didn’t have the Snoopy screensavers available after the update. Seems they are only available on 4K Second Generation Apple TVs; all mine are first gen 4Ks. Lame!
Well obviously it's because:
  • You can't play 4K content on Apple TV 4K gen 1
  • You can't play 60 fps video on Apple TV 4K gen 1
  • You can't play modern codecs on Apple TV 4K gen 1 (oh wait, you can prerender/transcode it in any that you need)
  • You can't play HDR content on Apple TV 4K gen 1 (oh wait, again with the damn prerender/transcoding)
Need some help here Tim! I can't fanboy this hard on my own 😓

If I could use it over Ethernet I need nothing else as I have the one with the Ethernet port. However, I have to use WiFi. I would like WiFi7 or at least 6E to get it on the 6GHz band.

There are a lot of WiFi networks where I live.

Does anyone else not see the “aspect ratio” option in the settings? I have an ultrawide monitor and want to use the ultrawide format obviously but I don’t see that option on my Apple TV. I just restored it and still don’t see it.

I have the exact same problem.

1440p ultra wide monitor connected to a 4K 1st gen Apple TV.

Anyone noticing Prime having more 5.1 audio cutouts/audio garbled after the update. Seems like rebooting the ATV 4k helps but it returns after about 2 hrs of view time. It cutout before but it would resolve after a second or two now it doesn’t.

I’m not noticing this issue under Netflix or Max.

Like almost everything else they do these days, their strategy is to sell to people that DON’T currently own their products. Some folks may replace their old Apple TV with a new one, but there will always be more people in the world that don’t own Apple TV’s than those that do.

I’m betting it’s only available on the latest Apple TV 4K. I seriously don’t feel like buying a new one just for that but I will have to.
