Apple today released visionOS 2.2, the second major update to the visionOS 2 operating system that came out in September. visionOS 2.2 comes more than a month after the launch of visionOS 2.1.

visionOS 2.2 can be downloaded on all Vision Pro headsets by navigating to the Settings app, selecting the General section, and choosing the Software Update option.

To install an update, the Vision Pro headset needs to be removed, and there is a software progress bar available on the front EyeSight display.

visionOS 2.2 adds new wide and ultrawide aspect ratios to the Mac Virtual Display feature, so you can have more workspace when using the Vision Pro as a display for your Mac. Apple says that the ultrawide setting is the equivalent of two 5K monitors side by side.

The update also includes Multiview for watching up to five MLS and MLB games at once, and it lets you view spatial photos and videos that are embedded on web pages. Apple's full release notes for the update are below.
Mac Virtual Display
- Use Mac apps and games with a new aspect ratio: wide (21:9) and ultrawide (32:9) - the equivalent of two 5K monitors side by side
- Route audio from your Mac to Apple Vision Pro

Apple TV
- Watch up to five MLS and MLB games at once with Multiview
- Watch live sporting events together with SharePlay

Safari
- Tap to view spatial photos and videos embedded on web pages

iPadOS 17.7.3 (21H312) - December 11, 2024
macOS 15.2 (24C101) - December 11, 2024

visionOS 2.2 (22N842) - December 11, 2024
watchOS 11.2 (22S101) - December 11, 2024

For iOS/Mac seeds kept seeing the Darwin Kernel change with RC to RC2 to public. Suggesting low-level/security activity tweaks.

This update genuinely feels like a true 1.0 for the Vision Pro. All areas of the UI feel snappier and the Mac virtual display is night and day. Not only are the wide and ultra wide options actually very useful but the general display sharpness has really improved. I'm typing this right now using virtual display after using my Vision Pro for over a couple hours now for work... Normally I never touched virtual display for anymore more than a few minutes at a time and certainly never for any serious work.

The display is also curved as compared to flat on 2.1.

I love the curved display. It looks so much better than a flat display. Going to use this a lot on my trip :)

So far I don't like the curved display. I liked the flat display better.

Also, I can't figure out how to get the ultra-wide display. How do we enable it?

Edit: had to update the MacBook as well to enable ultra-wide display. This is wild. Now I'm thinking it could go with a taller display, basically, 4x monitors in a 2x2 grid.

Very good summary - 2.2 is the level of refinement we had been waiting for but I don’t complain. Given the choice to have earlier access or more refinement I’d have chosen earlier access.

Virtual display is nothing short but amazing. First time ever having not to worry about large pivot table traveling or multiple APPs on the AVP with macOS.

For me a huge benefit. New immersive content coming too.

Excellent times to be alive.

I felt the same way at first, when I first installed the 2.2 beta.

Recently I had the chance to use a 2.1 version and the flatness was no longer appealing to me, especially if you use wide or ultrawide.

Anyway it is not a choice so we have to live with Apple’s decision

Now waiting for iPhone mirroring to work in AVP the way it works in Mac. It is a pain to unlock the phone when using AVP. I want to be able to control the iPhone in AVP and also to lock/black out the iPhone when paired with AVP. 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼

The curvature is so small that it hardly distracts and in case of the 'wide' setting it's more than acceptable. The 'ultra wide' is hardly usable for me but nice to have nonetheless.

In case it is so small as with the 'wide' setting it is hardly distracting for me - I still don't like it when the curvature is pronounced heavily and is obviously a gimmick - things should support productivity and not be just gimmicky IMHO

Who knows what's coming in the future - might be an indication of higher resolution future real world displays?
Now waiting for iPhone mirroring to work in AVP the way it works in Mac.
And iPad !!!! - these two options would make a huge difference - the iPhone with all the company APPs on it would make a fantastic mobile working platform far beyond the capabilities of a SmartPhone - would be a very very good idea to be able to have virtual display technology - iPad would be even more attractive and has probably more horsepower to drive it.

I want Excel, PPT and Word to be used in company environment with Outlook - for the phone I would only care if it can drive a huge real estate.

I guess we will see more virtual screen technology in the future.

It's a real shame they didn't price the AVP 1.0 at more like $1k-1.5k

I could see folks picking one up to "just to have" for content and this type of usage (Mac monitor)

The pricing just makes it so hyper niche

With less hardware capability and lower resolution OLED panels or lower contrast LCD panels ...

It has been analyzed that the BOM cost is north of $ 1500 - you surely don't expect Apple to deliver the free of charge update and the HW for the BOM cost - let alone the demo and return policy and the free content they are creating - for me my maxed out AVP is aa steal for the money!

Actually I think this is not going to fly until the weight comes down significantly - for me 2 .. 3 h are o.k. but nothing beyond that - that's me of course but it is the weakest point of the AVP - I could not care less about the price - it is fantastic and a decent MBP is also north of $ 3 k

Apple can live with that provided it has a stable demand for that quality. I would always rank quality over quantity.

I can’t see AVP being priced less than a top tier iPhone. The tech is top notch and unequaled by others.

That said, I agree that it would sell more if it is priced lower.

Recently got a second set (mint as the owner had issues with ordering prescription lens) for my family at US2.7k. As it also came with the AVP travel case, I thought it was a steal. The seller told me that there were others who wanted it but I was first to offer at his reserved price 😆

Oh ya, can I grumble a bit about the AVP travel case? It feels very premium and can be relied on to protract the AVP.

But it is so huge and heavy that I got smaller and lighter case when I travel. 😂

I bought this significantly smaller travel case for € 24
Serves the purpose good enough.
I don’t need a premium suitcase set for my sports car for 10x the price since there is a certain name printed on it.
The interior of the AVP is top notch and unique in the market though ;)

That’s very true. Just that it came as a set. If not, I will never get it too.

Your set looks custom made for VP. Good value for the price!
