Apple Remote Desktop won't connect via internet

Hi, I'm trying to connect to my dad's iMac over the Internet using ARD 3.6.1

All the sharing preferences are set on his machine and the ports are forwarded.

I've added his DNS name into ARD on my iMac and I can see his data in the All computers list, along with his IP, status, current user and current app. all the data is getting updated, eg. when he changes app it is reflected in my screen.

However, I cannect observe or control it.

we are both on Mountain Lion.

Any ideas ?????
