Is it possible to use the Apple Remote [the one that used to come with the macbook but is now $19] to control a Keynote presentation? For instance, could you use it to switch slides or activate animations?

I think so, but it is infrared so you will need to be line of site with the receiver on the front.
 
yeah. you can use the apple remote for that. make sure that you pair your macbook with that specific remote it you are giving a speech infront of a crowd that may have macs. then things might happen on all of thier macs as well... (bad experience coming to mind)

and you dont need to point directly at the ir receiver. as long as your close, youre fine, for the most part.
