Anyone has any idea how to stop this function from disappearing when you use an external firewire audio interface? Even when I push the buttons on the keyboard I only get a crossed out circle icon over a maximized volume bar. This bugs me since I can turn down output volume in individual apps (like iTunes) but not the overall volume.

Sounds like its digital volume. Same applies if you connect a optical cable, this is because its supposed to be all at the same level. The itunes control is higher up so it can control volume. The actual system volume controls are lower level so they can't be adjusted. Aggravating i know something we have to live with.:(

Ah thats a shame. The funny thing is, it pretty much renders the remote volume buttons useless. Whenever I'm not connected through optical or firewire audio the volume is so low I need to be close to the macbooks tiny speakers anyway. Ridiculous really..

You can always map the buttons to something different. Using Mira the app.
