I download an iPhone app onto my phone from iTunes. A few days later, Apple removes it from iTunes. What happens to the app on my phone? Is it removed as well? It continues to work as before but no upgrades and support? It becomes an orphan and stops working?

Nothing. No. Yes. No.
Make sure you backup the original .ipa file. You know... In case you delete it.

One caveat - it will work unless or until Apple remotely deletes it. They can do this (like Google did with a couple of Android apps recently), but haven't done it ... yet.
