"Truth Be Told," an Apple TV+ series starring Octavia Spencer and Aaron Paul, has been renewed for a second season, Apple announced today.

The show was originally planned as a limited series, but was also designed to work for a multi-season run, with each season focusing on a new story with new characters.

Octavia Spencer will be in the second season of the show as podcaster Poppy Parnell, but the main storyline will cover a new case. The first season followed Parnell as she worked to reopen a murder case that made her a national sensation and brought her face-to-face with the man (Warren Cave, played by Aaron Paul) she may have mistakenly helped put behind bars.
"Octavia's performance and Nichelle's story struck a chord with audiences," said Matt Cherniss, head of development, Apple Worldwide Video. "We are proud of this powerful show and the incredible team behind it, and look forward to a second season."
Apple released the first season of "Truth Be Told" on December 19, and all of the episodes are now available to stream. There's no word on when the second season will premiere.

Apple has renewed many of its shows for a second season, including "Little America," "Mythic Quest," "Dickinson," "See," "Servant," and "For All Mankind."

It is very surprising that it didn't initially get the multi-season order, like every single other Apple TV+ show. I'm betting Apple felt the viewership numbers were high enough to justify the renewal.

I really hope they tighten up the writing for season 2. Too over the top at times I thought...

Hmm. I felt the story was very self contained and doesn't really need to say anymore. I guess I'm kind of a curmudgeon who wonders why every series need multiple seasons...

From the article:
"...with each season focusing on a new story with new characters.
Octavia Spencer will be in the second season of the show as podcaster Poppy Parnell, but the main storyline will cover a new case."
Doesn't appear to be "self contained".

Not anymore, right.

he means that initially this was meant as a limited series, as evidence by the non renewal and the fact that the story started and ended in one season.

It was about Poppy failing and redeeming herself as a too judgmental podcaster

What ever the original intention was is now irrelevant.
What ever he/she thought of the original premise of the limited series is now irrelevant.
The series has expanded beyond his/her expectations, which is evident in the article.
What happened before is not relevant to the expansion of the series.
That was then, this is what will be.
The series story is no longer "self contained".

TLDR: That isn't true. The original intention is not irrelevant.

Clearly, an audience viewer would watch the first season and have zero expectation for additional seasons. I, and the other poster are commenting on the fact that based on our viewing of the first season it appeared the story was self contained in one season. And that is still a true fact.

The only thing happening here is that a new story is being made in the same universe as the first season. All the other characters, suspects, victims, murderer, etc., from the first season are irrelevant to a new season as it has been reimagined.

This is an old debate. Should entertainment studios resurrect limited series and expand them out? Sometimes it works out (True Detective failed in season 2 but was amazing again in season 3), sometimes it doesn't (Big Little Lies as a prime example. Season 1 told a full story. Season 2 was completely irrelevant and not needed. Same with Broadchurch. Story was wrapped up in first season with amazing ending and reveal. Second season was a meandering mess).

We obviously aren't commenting on what WILL happen going forward, we are commenting on whether a series such as this should or benefits from additional world building seasons. I personally think it's better to start out fresh with a new story, as too often these ideas don't work out. I would be similarly disappointed if Watchmen or the Outsider went for a second season as their stories are one season long, in all fairness.

I only made it through 3 or 4 episodes before I lost interest. I didn't like the lead actor, or her character for that matter.
I haven’t gotten past her name yet.

Every time I read it, I’m like, really? Poppy Parnell? That’s the name you decided to go with?

idk, maybe I’ll get over it and give it a shot.

Yeah, I don’t love ribbing on Apple, but this show was the one I couldn’t connect with. And I love this genre the most of any other. Way too over the top. The twins were annoying. Too much exposition.

Yeah, too bad the writing was lame and the cast was iffy.

Haven’t watched this but I’m glad Mythic Quest was renewed. It was a lot better than I thought it would be and my wife also enjoyed it. I also think For All Mankind was interesting and slowly getting better as it ventured more into the sci-fi side of things as the timeline diverged from reality.

Same here, Mythic Quest is great. Only have episode 9 to go.

As has been mentioned a few times before in other threads, the ‘standalone’ episode was fabulous! Really impressed at what they achieved with that one, particlularly given the 30 minute run-time!

I’ve only watched the first episode of For All Mankind so far and I’m really looking forward to the rest of them - just haven’t had the time to watch!

This one is in the Up Next queue for me as well - keen to see what Octavia Spencer does in the role.

Good series. Glad it'll be back with a new story. Just hate having to wait a whole nuther year for these 8-episode series to come back.

Most streaming TV is 8-10 episodes a year. (Netflix has been known to take 2 years for some shows).

This is right in line with the industry.

I just hope we don't have to see any more about Poppy's family. Every scene with her family dragged and couldn't get me interested.

Interesting that they renewed the series for a second season because as far as I know, the first season was based on the book Are You Sleeping by Kathleen Barber. Wonder if the new case (second season) will be based on another novel.

I think the article mentions that they are writing the new story from scratch. Not sure if the author is collaborating but there isn’t another book to base it on.

I thought the actor was fine, but I can't stand the character. Which could be a sign that the actor did a good job!
