I stopped using my iphone 7 as I am sure it has the Audio IC problem but now I want to give it to my son as his first phone. Does anyone have an idea what Apple will charge to repair it in the UK?

Do I have to book an appointment with a Genius first?

Apple will charge $320 U.S. (233 GBP) to replace the phone. I would definitely make an appointment if you decide to go that route but truthfully the 7 isn't worth that much IMO. You could look for a used SE2 as it will be supported much longer and won't have the same issues the 7 did plus it is has updated hardware using the same form factor..
