Apple is preparing to offer in-store iPad repairs for the first time, according to French site iGeneration.

The report claims that by the end of 2025, around 30 Apple Stores will be able to carry out certain iPad repairs directly with on-site technicians. The participating stores will be mostly located in the United States.

Today, Apple resolves iPad hardware problems in Apple Stores by simply offering a complete replacement of the device, often with a quote at the maximum out-of-warranty price. The faulty or broken device is then sent to a repair center.

The final invoice is apparently often revised down since the repair subcontractor only replaces the damaged part, but an accurate picture of the final repair price is not provided during the customer's first appointment at the Genius Bar. Apple is now seemingly looking to overhaul this system starting in September, providing exact quotes just like it does for iPhone and Mac repairs.

Earlier this year, Apple announced that its Self Service Repair program would expand to the iPad lineup for the first time.

It's great to see Apple is getting back to their stores offering services beyond just repeating what is publicly available. That was one of the things that made the Apple Store unique.

On a related note, the design in the image attached to the article is a breath of fresh air. Having dedicated space for pickup and support is, as Apple loves to say, a game-changer that takes things to a whole new level. Customers will love it!

To be fair this isn't a service that most people need. The batteries last a LONG time, don't really break even if you lightly drop them. I still use my first gen iPad Air and the only reason I don't still use my original iPad was because they freakin' orphaned it out from under me. Bad Apple, bad boy. Put down the golden plaque!

Somebody must be building replacement OSs or hacks that let you run modern software, like OpenCore that I am running on this MBP (2015).

I hope they take care of these employee's. Taking apart iPads is no joke, and takes quite some time if done correctly and patiently. Maybe they have some new robots that can take them apart like they have with iPhones

Didn’t expect the look of the store to be polarizing. I love this new design.

As for onsite iPad repairs I think it is a great thing that will be poorly received by folks who have been used to the status quo of service for an iPad in an Apple Store for the last decade.

Because repairs were unavailable, Apple Stores would swap the iPad or order a new one. Customers used to this won’t love hearing that instead of getting a brand new one, they’ll just get new glass/batteries.

That being said I think the hours/days required to service the products are not enough inconvenience to justify the environmental impact of swapping them left and right. This is the way I hope the industry continues to move.

Good if it happens. But not sure what repairs will be done. FaceID repairs probably. Think for major repairs, a full replacement migt still be the way.
