Apple Reportedly Working on Foldable iPhone With Similar Design as Samsung's Galaxy Z Flip

Apple is working on a foldable iPhone that could be released as early as 2026, according to an exclusive report published today by The Information.

The report claims the device would feature a "clamshell" design, similar to Samsung's line of Galaxy Z Flip smartphones. Apple is said to have contacted suppliers in Asia in recent months about making components for the device.

Rumors about a foldable iPhone have circulated for many years, but the report claims that Apple is finally moving forward with the project. The device has allegedly been given a codename of "V68" inside Apple, suggesting that work is ramping up.

Apple is said to have struggled to achieve its goal of eliminating a visible crease in the area where the iPhone's screen would fold, but this obstacle could eventually be overcome. However, there is of course a possibility that Apple decides not to release a foldable iPhone, should the device fail to meet the company's high quality standards.

In any case, it appears that a foldable iPhone is still at least a few years away.

Exactly. Aside from people with pockets too small for the current phones I don't see the utility.

I swear I saw a foldable iPhone in the wild last Summer in NY at a concert. Full iOS icons/camera/look but foldable. Was in front of me recording the band- blocking my view so I got a good look ha.

These have considerable issues with battery and other drawbacks to work out. Plus, I don’t see the point of this type of foldable. I was hoping they were working on a book foldable with a massive display akin to a Samsung Fold.

A “visible crease” is a big No-no for me. I’m not sure what is what is the need for a foldable phone? Maybe less space in my pocket….. however I can see why some people could want a foldable iPad (like having a tablet)

I can have a nice square phone that although wont be as slim as my mini, will at least be short enough to not topple out of my hand.

I’m sold. At this point, I can deal with a slight crease. Most serious content will be viewed on a larger screen for me, personally.

The point is that Apple can intro a Flip-style phone for an insane price, and then add a Fold-style phone a year later for a more-insane price.

But personally, as somebody who misses the Mini form factor, I’d opt for a Flip for portability.

Hey Timmy, just an idea… since it seems you’re out of ideas. Why not let Samsung build a foldable phone for you. They have overcome the difficulties and are able to build it with a great telephoto lens, offer more RAM and build quality is on par with Apple “standards”. Put an Apple logo on it and charge a few $ 100 extra for it. Timmy can count the beans and the diehard Apple fans have a folding iPhone. Something Apple isn’t able to make in the next foreseeable years. Win win for everyone 😜

Looks like Apple has gone with the safe option rather than something like Oppo’s rollable.

Clamshell forces the user to unfold to use since the outer display is so small.
