Today is Earth Day and in celebration of the occasion, Apple has updated the logos of some of its retail stores with green leaf accents, as it does each year on April 22. The green leaves mark a departure from the standard white logo, and Earth Day represents one of the few occasions each year where Apple tweaks its store logos.

Along with installing green-leafed Apple logos at retail stores Apple may also be planning to hold a special Earth Day celebratory event at its Cupertino campus, as it did last year.

In a tweet about Earth Day, Tim Cook linked to Apple's environmental website and highlighted the company's efforts to "leave the world better than we found it." Apple updated the website two days ago with its most recent Environmental Responsibility Report, noting that 100 percent of its U.S operations and 87 percent of its global operations are now run on renewable energy.

Under Tim Cook's watch, Apple has ramped up its environmental conservancy efforts, heavily pursuing improved recycling, renewable energy through solar farms, a reduced carbon footprint, and most recently partnering with The Conservation Fund to protect and create the forests that supply its packaging materials.

good for the earth, the brand, the image of apple as a green leader around the world...regardless of all their motivations politically, financially, it would be an easy argument to not do what they are doing. i'm glad they have chosen to commit as much as they can to a more green corporate industrial philosophy.

I wish they release the next generation MacBooks with the green Apple Logo backlit, just like above. It will look epic and will justify Apple's initiative of being energy efficient.

Apple has a long history of polluting Earth. With all the money they made they can try to repair all that now! Will they take responsibility and actually do that? If not, those statements make are very sad!

Earth Day Irony?

While I'm not an environmental activist, I'm sure that making thousands of T-Shirts helps leave the earth better than one found it. Does anyone else see the irony here when Apple uses more of the Earth's resources than most? ;) With that said, I love me some Apple and some capitalism, and being responsible about the effects of your actions is never a bad idea.

Coloring part of the logo green is a good first step.

How about making it so we can actually update our hardware instead of having to discard it when it gets old?

That would help too.

where's the down vote when i truly need it?

WTF happened to these boards
I suspect Apple could give everyone on earth a computer, and a million bucks and settle the middle east tension, and cure cancer, but a big chink of the posters here would still b***h about it.

Quite a loaded accusation without justification. Pretty bad if even I (hardly an "environmentalist") feel motivated to respond to your imputation.

Apple is among the top-rated "green" companies. They're the only one I know of making a serious & extensive effort to go off-grid, removing toxins & pollutants from their products & manufacturing, and otherwise reducing their environmental impact short of simply shutting down operations.

I'm doing the best thing for the environment by not buying new Macs. I get one used and use it until Apple or Google force me in some way to get a newer (used) one. Apple drops support for old Macs, and Google messes with the web standards to put old browsers out of use.

People are complaining because it's complete lies. Apple are not green in anyway shape or form. They mass produce itoys, every year they encouraging you to buy a new one.

A few solar panels does not off set 1% of the amount of energy and resources they use.

Your statistic isn't correct.

Yep... Really not sure where people find time in their days to follow a website covering a brand they clearly don't like and comment on all these articles...

Well, at least it's a far cry from burning over 35,000 gallons of jet fuel and emitting 375 tons of carbon dioxide by taking Air Force One to Florida to make a speech about carbon emissions.
