Apple today announced that Tap to Pay on iPhone is available in Austria, Czech Republic, Ireland, Romania, and Sweden, providing a way for independent sellers, small businesses, and larger merchants in these countries to use an ‌iPhone‌ as a contactless payment terminal.

Tap to Pay first arrived in February 2022 in the US, and allows iPhones to accept payments via Apple Pay, contactless credit and debit cards, and other digital wallets‌‌‌. All transactions are encrypted, and Apple has no information about what is purchased or the person who made the purchase.

No additional hardware or credit card machine is required‌ to use Tap to Pay on ‌iPhone‌. The feature uses NFC technology to securely authenticate the contactless payments, plus the feature also supports PIN entry, which includes accessibility options.
Starting today, Adyen, SumUp, and Viva.com are the first payment platforms to offer Tap to Pay on iPhone across all five countries. Global Payments with Erste Bank is available in Austria, Czech Republic, and Romania; Stripe is available in Austria, Czech Republic, Ireland, and Sweden; Nexi is available in Austria and Sweden; Revolut is available in Austria and Ireland; myPOS and PAYONE are available in Austria; and Zettle by PayPal is available in Sweden. hobex in Austria, BOI Payment AcceptanceGlobal Payments and Square in Ireland, and Surfboard Payments in Sweden will enable Tap to Pay on iPhone for their customers in the coming weeks. Tap to Pay on iPhone works with contactless credit and debit cards from leading payment networks, including American Express, Discover, Mastercard, and Visa.
Tap to Pay on ‌‌‌‌‌iPhone‌‌‌‌‌ requires ‌‌‌‌‌iPhone‌‌‌‌‌ XS or newer models, and works for customers as any normal ‌‌‌‌‌Apple Pay‌‌‌‌‌ transaction would. Sellers just need to open up the app, register the sale, and present their ‌‌‌‌‌iPhone‌‌‌‌‌ to the buyer, who can then use an appropriate contactless payment method.

It is now available in 17 countries, including United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, Japan, Austria, Czech Republic, Ireland, Romania, the Netherlands, Sweden, Brazil, Italy, France, Taiwan, Ukraine, and Germany.

I still don’t understand how this works. It says open your app and register the sale? There is nothing in my wallet app, Revolut app, or BOI app to register any sales or set this up. So, what?

Edit; I’m in Ireland by the way.

As a Swede, it's very unusual for Sweden to be so early with "Apple stuff" - we still don't even have Apple News or Apple Fitness+. Rare win.

That said, I don't see how Apple will ever compete with Swish..

Yes, I’m able to read thanks. It says no other hardware or additional credit card machines needed.

other digital wallets using only their iPhone and a partner-enabled iOS app — no additional hardware or payment terminal is required

So by this article I can just tap a card to my phone and get paid? That isn’t working. I have 2 of those partner enabled apps and can’t activate it in either. Your comment is not helpful in the slightest.

Well Apple removed news for a lot of countries in Europe months ago. We had it here in Ireland then one day it was gone from our phones, no warning no explanation. No one even talked about it. Insane.

Early? It's been available for almost 3 years elsewhere, Lol 🤣

I kind of feel like this may be misconstrued by some people in the US, with them thinking contactless payments in general are only now arriving in European countries… When we've had contactless everywhere in UK for at least a decade, and it's become ubiquitous across Europe.

So they have no information on who made the purchase? What if somebody has to get a refund?
The same as with any retail payment. The buyer gets a receipt as proof of purchase and you can map that to the transaction.

Why do you need any personal information to issue a refund?

It's for people selling you stuff. They'd use their Revolut Business or Stripe app (for example) to enter the amount you owe, and then they'd present their iPhone to you. Then you just use tap to pay on your card, Apple Pay, Google Pay, etc. to tap their phone as if it was a normal card terminal. It means they don't need to have an accessory to accept payments with their phone anymore.

Apple News is largely terrible anyway.

I'm always intrigued by this sentiment – what is terrible about it?
Features? Content?

I find that if I add some reputable news organisations to the 'Following' section, it's really good at surfacing interesting articles.

Or are you talking about the non-News+ version of Apple News?

Would be nice if I could have used Apple Pay during India visit instead of GPay(GooglePay). As Apple is expanding it's manufacturing in India as well local sell of Apple products; ApplePay and other financial payment apps by Apple is important in region..

I think featrure is poorly presented. You do not need additional HW but you need service provider who will proceed that transaction as I understood. I may be wrong.
My expectation is that my bank would build this into their banking app but not sure it is possible or they are interested to do that.
And I guess service provider asks fee for that. So you are not completely free. Correct me if I am wrong please.
And If someone czech has clue, how to make it work here, I will be glad to know how.

Greece says hello. We don’t even have Siri in Greek. Viva.com (one of the 3 providers) is even Greece based.
