Apple-Kanata.jpg
Apple has leased a 22,100-square-foot office space in the G. Best Building, a multi-floor suite in Kanata, Ontario, a suburb of the Canadian capital Ottawa, according to the local newspaper Ottawa Business Journal.

The report, citing "several sources," claims that Apple will use the building, located at 411 Legget Drive in the Kanata Research Park, as a R&D facility. The office would presumably operate under subsidiary Apple Canada.

How Apple plans to use the alleged office space remains unknown, but Kanata is notable for being the hometown of BlackBerry subsidiary QNX Software Systems, which develops software for multiple in-car infotainment systems.

At CES 2016, QNX introduced new platforms for automated driving systems, stirring speculation that Apple's new Kanata offices could be linked to the development of its own electric vehicle, which may or may not have self-driving capabilities. The much-rumored "Apple Car" could enter production by 2020.

Apple Canada is headquartered at 120 Bremner Blvd in downtown Toronto, located about 250 miles west of the Ottawa region.

Pretty much all car entertainment systems run on QNX.

Car manufacturers have extremely high standards when it comes to any electronics in their car.

I wouldn't be surprised if Apple are needing QNX help to get CarPlay actually into cars - instead of just commitments from Manufacturers to put it into their cars 'in the future'.

Google will likely do the same.

Kanata used to be Silicon Valley north. Think Nortel and Corel to name a few companies previously located there. A lot of tech talent there, not just at QNX.

And the Canadian Dollar is in the toilet, so it makes sense for Apple to hire engineers at $.70 on the dollar in one of Canada's main R&D centers. I think it has more to do with financial benefits than the car.

Hey, my home town!

Corel wasn't actually in Kanata, but definitely Ottawa.

There are still a lot of tech companies in the Kanata area, including Ciena, Alcatel, Dell, Mitel, Entrust, QNX, Lockheed Martin, CMC Electronics, CAE, Broadcom, Huawei, Blackberry, Qualcomm, amongst hundreds of smaller companies and startups.

So we finally know why, when you asked siri to show a picture of god, Daniel Alfredsson came up.

I think what he meant was electronics that control the car, like for instance motor management, those have to be high standard, you don't want your car to break down each and every day.

We were talking about the infotainment system, I thought. Those are abysmal.

Even when it comes to the other stuff though, it's concerning how hackable the cars are. They've been given features like remote start and keyless entry with zero thought on security. Except Tesla, of course.

I'd say more recently it would be Waterloo, Ontario, Canada Nortel is like 2 decades ago. Corel ... used to compete with Microsoft on the original Macintosh ... whatever happened to them? !
