Apple today seeded the first beta of an upcoming tvOS 14.4 update to developers for testing purposes, with the new software coming two days after the launch of the tvOS 14.3 update that brought a new Fitness app and support for Apple Fitness+.

Designed for the fourth and fifth-generation Apple TV models, the tvOS 14.4 developer beta can be downloaded onto the ‌‌‌‌‌‌Apple TV‌‌‌‌‌‌ via a profile that's installed using Xcode.

Apple's tvOS updates are often minor in scale, focusing on under-the-hood bug fixes and improvements rather than major outward-facing changes. There's no word yet on what's included in tvOS 14.4 update, but we'll update this article should anything new be found.

Though we don't often know what's new in tvOS during the beta testing process, we let MacRumors readers know when new updates are available so those who are developers can download it upon release.

The main tvOS 14 update released in September brought expanded Picture in Picture support, new HomeKit integration with HomeKit Secure Video cameras, support for multiple Apple Arcade profiles, and more, with details available in our tvOS 14 roundup.

Since it didn't make 14.3, maybe this will be the one that brings new-generation-console controller support.

Well aware of Apple's feedback process. I used general terms in my post, but I am personally only concerned about the new XBox controller. And in that case, we already have the official response:

"Microsoft and Apple are working together to bring compatibility for the Xbox Series X controller to customers in a future update."

Maybe they will sort out their stupid parental controls one day, if you have kids and set them it hides all restricted content, rather than the normal PIN restriction. If you browse Apple TV+ you see bugger all, but you can still manually search content. How friendly, only place I know that does parental controls by hiding content. I note this is Apple content only, TV app, movies app etc.

On 14.3 anyone have issues with playing videos from library using computers app cuts off after a few minutes and takes you back to the library selection screen.

How many of you use the Beta's? Is it a good idea or not? And while I'm here, can I ask what's the best settings? Many thanks.

I’m with you there - Even the Apple TV 3 has better parental controls overall than this, including 3rd party services. Made submissions via Apple feedback process plenty of times, but obviously it’s either too difficult or they aren’t interested.

Yep, tvOS 14 is so buggy when it comes to Home Sharing and the Computers app that Apple have replaced both my Apple TV 4K units under warranty (mainly because of the Dolby Digital 5.1 bug in 14.x) and I’m now keeping them at tvOS 13.4.8

Lucky you!! Mostly because you are still at 13.4.8 😊
