Apple today seeded the first beta of an upcoming watchOS 3.1.1 update to developers for testing purposes, one week after releasing watchOS 3.1, the first watchOS 3 update, and more than a month after releasing watchOS 3 to the public.

watchOS 3.1.1 can be downloaded through the dedicated Apple Watch app on the iPhone by going to General -> Software Update. To install the update, the Apple Watch must have 50 percent battery, it must be placed on the charger, and it must be in range of the iPhone. watchOS 3.1 requires an iPhone running iOS 10 to install.

It is not yet known what new features might be included in the watchOS 3.1.1 update, but we'll update this post with any new discoveries. watchOS updates are often minor in scale, focusing on under-the-hood bug fixes and performance improvements.

watchOS 3 completely overhauls the interface on the Apple Watch, introducing a dedicated app dock, instant launch apps, new watch faces, and new complication options. There are new Activity sharing features, a "Breathe" app guides users through deep breathing sessions to cut down on stress, and an SOS feature can automatically call emergency service.

For more details on what's new in watchOS 3, make sure to check out our watchOS 3 roundup.

Maybe it will FINALLY fix the group message notification bug that occurs when messages come from SMS receipts

I'm looking to purchase a used Apple Watch which will probably have 3.1 on it.
My phone and desktop are on iOS 8 and snow leopard.
I take it I will only be able to use the watch to tell time until I can purchase a new computer so I can run iOS 10?

Just installed the 3.1.1 and I noticed that Apple removed the lock toggle in the control center on the original Apple Watch. Why would they remove just the lock watch toggle? Is it still there on the Series 2?

You'll need an iPhone 5 or better to use the original apple watch. The watch won't do anything until it is paired with a phone (it won't even tell the time).

Thanks for the heads up. I do have an iPhone 6. Maybe I should look at a pebble. Too bad you can't downgrade back to 1.1 that way it be compatible again.

I think iOS 10.1 is way better than iOS 8.
Also, watchOS 3.1 is miles better than 1.1.

Update shows up without profile installed on watch after I installed the 10.2 iOS beta.

You're right. On my original Apple Watch (Series 0 :)) it's gone. Well that sucks! I actually used that button every night wanting to keep my watch on my wrist yet protected while sleep and using Sleep++.

After few days with the newest WatchOS 3.1.1 (Beta 1) I have noticed few bugs. The most annoying one to me is that the stock Hearth Rate app can't even measure pulse after the update, it just says Measuring... Measuring... And then after about a minute or so it displays "try again" and when it runs for second time, again fails and says that the fault is mine because the watch wasn't snug enough, but it is and sometimes it's even tight (third party hearth rate apps work normally). I force quit the app and restarted but the Heart Rate app will still fail, even unpaired my watch and reinstalled the OS (aka Factory defaults) but the app would not measure again, I guess that Apple should fix this issue in the next few betas. Also sometimes the Activity app will not record any activity, it will only display graphs but the calories, the stood hours and the exercise minutes will be stuck at 0, even though you just ran 10 km's :D... Battery life for now is good (right now here it's 00:19 here and the watch is at 50% I was using it normally 3 hours with display on and 14 hours background). The watch is the original Apple Watch Sport 42mm. Is someone else experiencing such a problems? Or is it just me? :D
