Apple today seeded the first betas of upcoming iOS 16.3 and iPadOS 16.3 updates to developers for testing purposes, with the new betas coming one day after the launch of iOS 16.2 and iPadOS 16.2.

Registered developers can download the iOS 16‌.3 and iPadOS 16.3 profiles from the Apple Developer Center, and once installed, the beta will be available over the air.

There is no word yet on what's included in the betas, but it is possible that this is an emoji update as Apple has not introduced new emoji for some time. When we install the update and find out what Apple has added, we'll update this article.

Probably to be released around March.

And potentially 16.4 shortly before WWDC23.

Then iOS 17 betas!!
This isn’t necessarily true.
15.3 also began beta testing in mid December of last year…
And it released in late January as pretty much a bug fix update…
Given that it’s been out for almost 40 minutes and so far absolutely nothing new has been found, I expect a similar schedule for this year.
15.3 as a big bug fix update, released in mid to late January
15.4 released in March as the next feature update.

Rinse and repeat for the next 11 months. I am noticing provisioning iOS 16 devices at work is filled with bugs. This time of the year, we would be getting warning emails to upgrade or devices by early next year. For some reason, thats not happening this time.

Expect beta 1 to be the main beta until after the holidays. Might be a good idea to make sure you back up your devices if you’re planning on updating (should be backing them up anyway).

Funny enough this being Dec 14th, they have time for a second beta in a week if needed. Otherwise it would be early second week of January 2023.

Some of the things that I think need to be fixed on iPadOS

When plugged into a Thunderbolt / Studio display
1. Allow me to use the camera on the display for FaceTime
2. If I have speakers attached via USB, let me use those
3. Allow me to turn off the iPad display (clam shell mode)

I sure hope there is to remove this advertising in the Apple TV app. I hope I’m not the only one livid about this and sending Apple feedback. I mean the entire page is an advertisement with one thin strip of what I was actually watching.
Where have you been? This what the TV app has been for the last couple of years.

It’s been getting there for sure. But not until now did I feel like they’ve gone too far. They actually shrunk the size of the icons for what I’m watching, and that huge banner across the top seriously makes me feel claustrophobic. It is looming over the one tiny strip of what I want to see. I don’t care if what’s below it is all ads, if I keep going down then I must be looking for something. But I don’t need a Goodyear blimp in my face all the time.

Even Hulu has a less distracting interface now. They’re about on par with Netflix. Instead of setting a high bar they just stooped to where everyone else is. It’s been talked about for a while now how these video streaming companies make deliberately bad apps from the perspective of what the user actually wants.
