Apple today released the first public beta of tvOS 18, giving the general public a chance to try out the new features ahead of the software's fall launch.

Public beta testers can download the tvOS 18 beta by opening up the Settings app on Apple TV, choosing the Software Updates section under System, and then toggling on the Get Public Beta Updates option. Signing up on Apple's public beta website is required to get the option to show up.

tvOS 18 isn't as feature rich as some of Apple's other updates, but it brings a new InSight feature to the Apple TV app. InSight is similar to Amazon X-Ray, providing real-time information about actors, music, and more in Apple TV+ shows and movies.

The Enhanced Dialogue feature uses computational audio and machine learning to better boost vocal clarity over background noise and music, plus it works with built-in TV speakers, AirPods, and other Bluetooth devices. Subtitles have been tweaked to show up automatically when relevant, such as when the TV is muted.

Apple added new screen savers and made it easier to swap between them, plus there's 21:9 aspect ratio support for projectors and an option for Live Captions during FaceTime calls.

tvOS 18 is limited to public beta testers and developers right now, but it will see a public launch this fall.

If you’re going to recognise projectors exist, 3D support would be nice too please Apple.

Will Apple ever fix the library? Movies and TV shows rarely display the artwork, or take a long time to do so, or only some are shown

I presume you mean within the AppleTV app. Try the often overlooked "Computers" app. It is ideal for anyones downloaded/ripped library and general access to all media types at home.

Focus of AppleTV app is rent/buy. Focus of Computers app is enjoying the media one has/owns. All the marketing is in the former. All of the easy usage is in the latter.

Not everyone wants to download every movie and TV show they’ve ever purchased onto their Mac (if they even own one)

The only things I want from tvOS is fixing the bug in Music where the Home screen refreshes while you're scrolling; and adding Shortcuts (so I can automate switching audio outputs based on the app).

Then they deal with whatever app shortcomings that come with “the cloud” services. OP seemed unhappy with the AppleTV apps less-than-ideal “library’ implementation. If OP has a local library, Computers (app) is a tangible alternative for them that might resolve some of their issues.

I also don’t think the OP was talking about purchased movies and tv shows. Any ripped movies I may have are on a hard drive I am able to connect to my Mac and use it with the computer app. Also, some modems will allow you to connect an external drive to them. In my experience it takes a lot of tweaking to get it to work but once it does it’s pretty nice. The last option I have used is a network attached storage (NAS). I used to use the western digital my cloud but the larger volumes became too expensive however for a smaller library they are nice. As with any physical drive you run the risk of damage and losing all your media.

Can confirm: "Computers" application for Home Sharing is underrated. Quite nice to have authority over my local files.

I really miss my old movies section. I need my total movie count I own displayed again and wish list back. I have only updated 1 of my 4 Apple TVs because of this reason. Because I don’t want to lose my movie count or Apple Wish List. It’s insane this was removed. It cost them nothing to have this and it was just removed a year ago. The wish list hurts them with me because I’m less enticed to buy more movies.

The enhanced dialogue function is fantastic. I can now turn off subtitles most of the time

It really is. It´s a pity that it only works on the second gen Apple TV 4K or later because it relies on machine learning routines, and the first gen Apple TV 4K A10X chip is not up to the task.

For local files I would consider to have a look at the app infuse. Far better than the computers app in my opinion.

I should have been clearer; movies and TV shows bought from iTunes Store do not show the artwork in the Library section of the TV app in tvOS.

Another thing that annoys me is the implementation of music videos in the Music app. There are many that you don't know exist in Apple Music because the tvOS app only shows the same popular ones. The quality of the videos is poor. For a particular artist, it bunches all videos together, whether they are music videos, live performances or interviews. There are duplicate music videos as well. It is so poorly done. Then there is playing the videos, which is another nightmare in itself, where you can't scrub properly to a particular point, or exit without the music still playing

I would just be happy if they fixed bugs like losing your place when you return to a previous screen, and removed all the ads they put in the main TV App screen about sports and AppleTV+, especially when you aren’t a subscriber. It’s gotten a little better recently but it is still much worse than it used to be.
