Apple today seeded the first version of an upcoming watchOS 2.2.1 update to developers, just over two weeks after releasing watchOS 2.2, a significant watchOS 2 update that introduced new features like multi-watch support for iPhones and Maps improvements.

The 2.2.1 beta can be downloaded through the dedicated Apple Watch app on an iPhone by going to General --> Software update. To install the update, the Apple Watch must have 50 percent battery, it must be placed on the Apple Watch charger, and it must be in range of the iPhone.

It's not yet clear what is included in watchOS 2.2.1, but Apple's release notes say it includes bug fixes and performance improvements, likely for issues discovered since the release of watchOS 2.2. We'll update this post with any new changes that are discovered in the watchOS 2.2.1 beta.

I'm all for updates and improvements but seems kinda strange since WWDC is getting close...

This is a very minor update, an x.x.x update, don't expect many beta's for this version. Apple will have the majority of engineers working on iOS 10 anyway. There are still three months to go yet before we see the first beta of iOS 10.

watchOS 2.2 was horrible for me. My watch slowed down, glances took 3x longer to update and finally complications disappeared. I had to unfair and repair (and sync) my watch an hour ago just to get things running properly.

Hopefully they'll increase the notification thump strength, I'm missing many of my text msgs during normal daily activity with the thump strength on the highest setting.

Complications that were not showing icons inside the progress ring seems to be fixed in this beta.

I am just hoping they announce the second watch soon...the one with GPS, four times the cpu power and a millimeter thinner

Def feels much quicker on 2.2.1 Siri and animations both.

My watch got a lot less time, maybe 30%. By 10/11pm it was asking to go to Useless mode, been doing the airplane trick though (turn on plane, off plane every 15/60 mins)

Usually it could easily get 24 hours which is.. Not great but currently doing About 14-18 tops; still Enojgh but a massive drop.

Thought it was bad Glances and have taken off a significant amount that I don't really use, bit better battery but bbbbb hoping the .1 fixes it...

9.3.1 though my phone is needing to be charged by maybe 9pm, it's not good. Can't pin down an app so it's probably something system based.

I've tried the airplane mode trick but does it still track your walking and running distance and your resting and active energy?

I remember one time I put the watch on the charger and normally how you can tap around the watch the screen would turn on and tell you the time.Well evertime I left the watch in airplane mode, it didn't turn the screen on when I had airplane mode on.

I mean like instead of the useless LPM, it works quite well.. Only really late at night when at home and yes it def keeps track of standing and other activity, haven't tried going for a run or anything though.

I would only leave it charging on airplane if I wanted to rapidly charge, not worth nightstand without night stand

I'm talking about the beta 2.2.1 (the title of the thread) which has been out for less than 24 hours.

Ya obv.

Has anyone worked out a "DFU" mode for the watch yet? I'm still hesitant to use them. I did install watchOS 2 betas and they were a bit touch and go for a while. One wouldn't let you iCloud verify and locked you out effectively without this little work around. Didn't brick thank gos.

Nope, and any DFU mode is likely to require a cable attached to the hidden diag port on the watch

Hmmm.. not to thread jack here but I just bought an Apple Watch last weekend and I'm wondering if I should have just waited for the next variation? Do we think that's right around the corner?

When ever I've installed a beta the whole time you're waiting for the "circle to complete" is a hold your breath sort of moment.

I'm excited for watchOS 3 but not 100% certain I'll start at b1 !

watchOS 2 was such a sea change to the /nasty I call it a beta/ watchOS "1.0” cough they shipped first.
