Apple today seeded the second beta of an upcoming tvOS 16.3 update to developers for testing purposes, with the beta coming nearly a month after the release of the first tvOS 16.3 beta.

Developers can download the tvOS 16.3 beta by downloading a profile onto the Apple TV using Xcode.

tvOS updates usually minor in scale, focusing on internal bug fixes and improvements rather than notable outward-facing changes. There is no word as of yet what's included in the tvOS 16.3 update, and no features were found in the first beta.

Apple shares some information on tvOS releases in its tvOS support document, which is updated after each tvOS launch, but it does not provide details on betas.

Though we don't often know what's new in tvOS during the beta testing process, we let MacRumors readers know when new updates are available so those who are developers can download it upon release.

I really like that after five minutes I'm the first one to post about this exciting development. Can we get Homekit working again?

This year, new MediaTek Pentonic chip TVs with support for the H266 codec (VVC) will be released. I wonder if Apple TV 4K will add support for this codec this year or not?

Apple adopted VVC's predecessor H.265 (HEVC) about 4 years after it was announced, for A10 or better.

It's entirely possible for Apple to adopt VVC sooner this time around, and the latest generation Apple TV's A15 might possibly support hardware-based H.266 (VVC) decoding. But I wouldn't bet on it.

Apple has implemented H265 for the release of Apple TV 4K.
Today, the main task of H266 will be to improve the video quality with the same video bitrate that is now in iTunes. Plus, the TVs will come out with support. Therefore, this time they don't have to wait that long :) But, of course, everything can be :)

My bad. Remote on the 2022 models are losing connection almost constantly. Only fix is to unpair and repair. Every single time.
Indeed - the 2022 model is garbage so far. Went back to the 2021 - too late to get the 2022 refunded. In addition to the remote issue as described, the ethernet model has some issues maintaining the ethernet connection at the full 1 GB speed. I go the hardware replaced but is on the design. Same cables, location, etc the 2021 model has no issues the 2022 model has. Hopefully it is a firmware solvable issue and not another class action in a year where Apple admits to nothing but will replace the device.

FWIW I have this issue as well and I'm able to fix it by swiping down on the control center, choosing the apple tv, and using the remote control on the phone to start the apple tv, navigate to settings -> system -> restart. Still awful but sounds slightly less awful than re-pairing.

I’ve been doing that as well. It’s so bad I’m just going to use the tv app in control center for now.

Same here. On the latest Apple TV, it constantly disconnects. I can reconnect if I put the remote on top of the AppleTV, but it will disconnect if I walk away. Rebooting works, for awhile. Then it does it again. I have this on both of my newest Apple TV's. Never had this issue on the older ones, even using the newer remotes.

You know, I thought it was just me having this issue. But I'm having this issue on the the last gen 4k Apple TV. I'm using the silver remote that has the lightning port. Every month or so i loose connection for my TV volume and the only solution I have found that works is to unpair/repair the remote.

I am having the losing connection on the remote issue. I have two of the new AppleTVs. Both the ethernet version although one is connected by wifi at the moment. It is the wifi connected one that disconnects from the remote. Happened about 10 times over the last two months (connected to a Samsung TV). The ethernet connected one hasn't done it once (connected to a LG TV).

To pair again you have to press back and volume up at the same time (for 5 secs) and have the remote near the box.

+1 on waiting for a fix on the remote issues.

I would also love for Apple to do a compromise on the new Up Next thing.

They might not adopt it at all if all the big streaming companies are behind AV1.

This beta didn't fix the remote issue. It was happening weekly, now it's almost daily. I start my day rebooting my apple tv using my remote on my phone before I can start watching and use the real remote. :(

I only saw that once with the remote paired with 2022 ATV4K, not similar remote paired with the 2021 ATV4k. Fortunately I can also make use of IpadOS remote app to connect to ATV4K 3rd gen to restart it. Sounds like Radio frequency (RF) interference from other sources, such as wireless speakers, cell phone, and so on causing the remote to disconnect. Most of the remotes I use are just IR not RF which the ATV4K remote is.
