Apple today seeded the second public beta of an upcoming macOS Sonoma 14.2 update, allowing non-developers to test out the software ahead of its release. The second public beta comes two weeks after the first public beta.

Beta testers can opt-in through the Software Update section of the System Settings app. Under Beta updates, simply toggle on the Sonoma Public Beta. Note that you must sign up to participate on Apple's beta testing website.

macOS Sonoma 14.2 adds Messages sticker reactions, which make it quicker to add a sticker or an emoji to an iMessage. It also includes support for collaborative Apple Music playlists, allowing multiple people to add songs to a single playlist.

There's a new Favorites Apple Music playlist as well, better support for Messages in iCloud syncing, and iMessage Contact Key Verification for people who face extraordinary digital threats.

Beta testing can be fun, as long as you don't mind possibly losing your data. Try at your own risk. But other Mac users will appreciate you reporting bugs to Apple before they affect them.

I'm glad to see the beta 2. Previous was among the buggiest I've encountered in quite a long time in the dev and now public beta programs. 16" MBP M2 Pro with a lot of stuff hanging off it.

Anyone having new issues over the previous 14.2 public beta? I had to jump onto the 14.3 beta on my main system to fix crashing when accessing external drives in 14.0/14.1. In 14.2 beta 1, drive access is still slow, but no more crashes. I'm just wondering if this has gotten better or worse over 14.2 beta 1. Thanks!

It's not all that bad. :D
As long as you create an external ASR (Apple Software Restore) volume using TimeMachine, CCC or something else. You can alway go as far as a DFU restore (factory reset/wipe of FW/OS) at a Apple Store with a appointment if your not already proficient at doing that and get right back to the recent MacOS environment (OS/Applications/User pref/data) of your choice. There are rare times something like this is what you need to do, but it's just something that can happen even with a public seed also. :)

I’m a pretty regular beta user, but after today probably will be a bit more cautious… went to update Sonoma beta this morning …

MacBook shut off for a minute or 2 and then kept kicking me back to unlocking the start up disk.

At the Apple Store and it created 3 instances of my hard drive…. Had to reformat and reinstall Sonoma. Thank goodness I back everything up to the cloud. So just beware…

All I want to know is did they fix the exFAT mess?

I have an 80TB drive that is not reliable in Sonoma, missing folders, can't access folders that say are there etc., worked in Ventura and can be read perfectly fine in Windows 10/11.

Before I spend the time copying the contents to my other drives and formatting/converting this to APFS I'd like to know ahead of (not wasting my) time.

IF the exFAT bug isn't cleaned up soon enough for you, a workaround would to try free/buy Macdrive for your Windows machine. I have it and it does work well; of course exFAT working properly would be better ✌️

Just did the second public beta update (23D5041e) install on my M1 Ultra MacStudio (128GB and 8 TB SSD) and also apparently it updated the two Studio Displays to 17.0 Build 21A329 as a progress bar was seen on each video screen in turn.

I think the only issue I’ve seen with Sonoma is losing network connections, and I’m not sure how much of that is really on dumb third-party VPN clients I have to use.

Time Machine in particular seems to fail a lot, allegedly due to an interrupted connection.

I’m also seeing an issue where Siri/Dictation supposedly recent used my mic, even though I have Hey Siri off.

Other than that… I like the new desktop/screen saver stuff, and expanded camera/mic UI.

WOW. Tim Cook was not kidding when he said all new development on the next versions of IOS and macOS were being put on hold to FIX BUGS in the current software!

This is all Mark Gurman's speculation as shown in that article. Apple would never divulge status or flow of unannounced hardware or software development. From a business perspective we all remember the Osborn effect. ;)

New 14.2 beta (23C5047e), and widgets are back (including the iPhone ones, but still cicking on a iPhone widget asks to open the app at the phone and does NOT work.
Copy/Paste and handoff within devices is also back
MBA 15" M2 here.
