Apple today seeded the second beta of an upcoming watchOS 9 update to its public beta testing group, allowing non-developers to experience the new watch software ahead of its fall release. The new beta comes two weeks after the first beta, and it corresponds to the fourth developer beta.

The watchOS 9 update can be downloaded after upgrading your iPhone to the public beta version of iOS 16. After installing iOS 16, the proper watchOS 9 profile from Apple's beta software website must also be installed.

The software can be accessed by going to General > Software Update in the Apple Watch app on iPhone. To update, ‌Apple Watch‌ needs to have 50 percent battery life, it must be placed on the charger, and it must be in range of the ‌‌‌‌‌‌‌iPhone.

watchOS 9 expands the sleep tracking feature to add sleep stages, allowing the watch to track when users are in REM Core, or Deep sleep, plus it supports a Medications app for managing and getting reminders for medications, vitamins, and supplements.

There are four new watch faces, including Lunar, Playtime, Metropolitan, and Astronomy, and the ECG app supports AFib History for tracking how long a person has been in atrial fibrillation.

Custom workouts have been added to the Workout app, and there are fitness improvements for runners, triathletes, and swimmers. Other new features include a CallKit API that allows VOIP calls to be answered on Apple Watch, Apple Watch Mirroring for controlling the Apple Watch with an ‌iPhone‌, Quick Actions for doing more with a double pinch gesture, and updates to the Reminders and Calendar apps.

More on everything that's new in the watchOS 9 update can be found in our dedicated watchOS 9 roundup.

It's always been the case - your watch gets bricked on the WatchOS beta, you need to get Apple to service it.
The only delta this time is that they actually segmented Dev/Public testers.

I somehow doubt they'd give us access to the diagnostic port. :D

Even the first Beta worked better on my S6 than all watchOS8 „stable“ versions, which were all riddled with all kinds of usability issues.
If watchOS9 improves even further, I‘ll be quite happy!

Beta 1 had better battery life on my series 6 than previous versions.
I wonder what this beta adds??? 🤔

It’s pretty solid.

right, i think since now there is a public beta test, they'd figure out a way to restore it without shipping off.

having said that, how does it run?

I like the new Metropolitan Watch face. It looks good on my Watch 7.

If Hermes makes a new face for Watch 8, give us the current face without the logo…

Works great so far. I have generally always had success with all of the Beta programs. Sure I have had bugs, especially iOS, but that's what Beta is for (as long as you report it thru Feedback Assistant).

If so then it confirms I’m not the only one that lost complications from this upgrade. Eg the Stocks complication is gone for me now.
Yes. There are issues with complications. Sometimes they disappear.

last night when I went to bed, all my 3rd parties complication where missing. This morning they are all there again 🤷‍♂️

Hmm...I'm using the Infograph face on the Nike SE and haven't had any issues with complications. (but I'm not using any 3rd party ones) - Calendar, Weather, Fitness, Timer.

Haven't noted/reported any issues with this beta build yet (but it's only been a day) :)

Hi,

Both my Apple Stocks and 3rd party weather complications are not working on any of my watch faces or are available to add as a new complication. It’s been 24 hours since I installed this watchOS beta. I’ve tried rebooting a couple times but both are still not working.

Like everything about watchOS 9 but the new small font when doing a workout.

The Apple Stocks complication and my 3rd party weather complication is now working with this new Beta….interesting that it came back after a few days without doing anything.
