Alongside the macOS 13.3 release candidate that came out today, Apple has provided a beta of new 16.4 firmware release candidate that's designed for the Studio Display.

All Studio Display models are able to receive over-the-air firmware updates, but this firmware update is limited to Macs that are running the macOS Ventura 13.3 beta at the current time. Studio Display owners running macOS Ventura 13.3 can go to System Settings > Software Update to install the firmware.

Studio Display owners who are not running macOS 13.3 will be able to download the new firmware when the update launches to the public.

A standalone monitor doesn't need an operating system, and it doesn't need to be nearly the cost of a comparable 27" iMac for no good reason. There was a time when Apple made good and affordable standalone monitors...
The Apple Thunderbolt Display cost $999 from 2011 to 2016. They were never affordable monitors in the context of the broader market.

I still can’t believe MacRumors is still salty that these were not “affordable Apple Pro Displays”.

Anyone know what the firmware update does?

Apparently, it activates a previously-unnoticed, robotic hand that reaches out, grabs wallets and empties them into an also previously unknown transporter slit which then drops the money into the Apple Inc. vault. There's more than one way to drive "another record quarter" than simply selling good hardware. ;)

And early rumors say the next update will activate the second hand, which reaches out, flips us upside down and shakes loose any spare change in our pockets (a literal shake down), also dropping it into the slit. Is Apple amazing or what? ;)

It's funny to me that people crap on this monitor for it's pricing, instead of recognizing it's virtually a "n of 1".

My only complaint with these monitors is the features - primarily that it would be nice if it accepted multiple inputs, and had a KVM switch to support input switching. This seems to be the biggest gap to me - not the pricing. 🤷‍♂️

Not affordable compared to cheap PC 1080p monitors, but it was affordable enough for a target audience of Mac users and not users of $500 PCs. Then they let it go on that long without an upgrade and discontinued it instead of refreshing it with a 5K display like we all wanted...

The Apple Studio Display is overpriced and over-engineered, but I love mine and there isn't really anything comparable at a significantly lower price. I still have hope that the Samsung Viewfinity S9 might be a competitor, but got tired of waiting at least on my main system.

I've been exceedingly happy with my ASD. It's sad that 95% of the responses to this article are people whining.

Has anyone noticed ANY change in behavior at all with this update? I haven't had any problems at all with my ASD, so I may just not install this update for a while until we're sure it doesn't cause problems.

That, and the height adjustable stand not just being the normal stand for the regular price. Add those two things and it's an immediate buy from me.

I will pay the actual price if have the same screen quality than the macbook pro 14/16, so for now yes, is overpriced.

I love my ASD. In spite of the price, I'd say it's one of the best Mac Purchases I've made. In some ways, it's similar to my original 17" Flat Screen ACD-Interfaced Studio Display from 2001. (No power switches, no external controls, but a killer beautiful display panel). I find the internal speakers and web-cam are perfectly fine for my use so it keeps my desk very minimalist. I went with the VESA display so I could get multiple dimension adjustments without paying $400 for Apple's display stand. (I already had a VESA mount on my desk).

If I had two things to nit-pick about (and only two): I wish I could switch between multiple Macs, and second, I wish I could daisy chain displays, but I'm not sure if that's even possible to do with 5K over thunderbolt.

Anyway: I'm a happy camper with mine. No idea what this latest software update will bring to the table though.

It would be better if everything on the monitor was essentially hardware pass-through with no upgradable firmware. Let the computer handle the processing.

My 2010 Cinema displays had updates in the beginning, this isn't a new thing and it's actually a good thing, let the monitor have bugs fixed via updates. I don't know why so many are against this.

Okay, to be fair, firmware updates to ensure the hardware is functioning at its basic level is a good thing. It’s the fact that the new display heavily processes the camera, audio, etc. I think people would prefer the raw data.

There shouldn’t be a software update for the display that changes how the camera processes its signal. Let the app on the computer handle this.

I think this is more what people mean.

I use it at work, and it's "fine" but for the price it should rival the features of my mbp screen: HDR up to 1600 nits with Pro Motion. I even requested it specifically because... well there aren't really any decent rivals at 5k unless you move up to the 6k XDR in that other price bracket. The problem for Apple is that if they did give it HDR and Pro Motion, they wouldn't sell any 6k XDR's.

(Looks at the two $3299 30” Cinema Displays on my desk from 2004)

“Affordable”. Riiight.

(I admit, I paid $200 each in 2020.)

that's my problem, for the price should have the same specs of the MBP 14/16 screen, I would buy it right now but is not, is old tech.

I'm waiting to see the new price on the XDR, if down to around $3200 maybe I could buy it, I like the 32 size, is not big but not too small like 27. Some people use 42 o 48 TVs and I hate it, too big.
