Apple today released the third betas of upcoming iOS 17.2 and iPadOS 17.2 updates to developers for testing purposes, with the software coming a week after Apple released the second betas of iOS 17.2 and iPadOS 17.2.

iOS-17.2-Feature-Warm.jpg

Registered developers are able to opt into the betas by opening up the Settings app, going to the Software Update section, tapping on the "Beta Updates" option, and toggling on the ‌iOS 17 or iPadOS 17‌ Developer Beta. An Apple ID associated with a developer account is required to download and install the beta.

The biggest new feature in iOS 17.2 is the Journal app, which can be used to record daily activities and thoughts. You can write about your day to day life, but Apple also provides topic suggestions based on the music you listen to, the places you visit, and the people you see. Journal entries support pictures, voice recordings, and location information, with the app organized by entry date.

In Apple Music, there's a Favorites playlist that houses everything you've favorited, plus Apple added support for collaborative playlists. You can now share a playlist with multiple people, and each participant can add songs.

Stickers can now be used to reply to iMessages when you long press on a chat bubble in the Messages app, and there's also now support for the extra-secure iMessage Contact Key Verification option. If you have an iPhone 15 Pro, the Action Button supports Translate in iOS 17.2, and there are new Weather and Clock widgets.

More on what's new in iOS 17.2 can be found in our iOS 17.2 beta features list.

Enough new features already! Give us more bug fixes.
Yeah, Messages have been problematic for some time. Landscape mode constantly freezes if coming from an another app via a notification. And, sometimes Messages just fails at sending messages. But, then sends 2 copies of same pic or message.

Also, got this annoying problem when typing that it just enters app switcher for no reason leaves the current app I'm on.

Is the Journal apo approaching its promised functionality, or is it still coming together?

It’s still coming together, it’s a little better on beta 3, I’ve been seeing more suggestions when I’m out and about, I’ve been spending more time on it ever since beta 3 dropped. Still, I’ll never use it past the beta stage, just don’t get it.

If this is new, I like the 17b3 iOS weather app change with a weather underground touch. It's an animated directivity wind map that who's on default rather then the precipitation map.

Select AVCaptureDeviceFormats now offer the ability to zoom when depth is enabled without a disruptive reconfiguration. (110654309)

iMessage Contact Key Verification

New Features

  • With iMessage Contact Key Verification, users can choose to further verify that they are messaging only with the people they intend. iMessage Contact Key Verification uses Key Transparency to enable automatic verification that the iMessage key distribution service returns device keys that have been logged to a verifiable and auditable map. When a user enables the feature, they will be notified about any validation errors directly in the Messages conversation transcript and Apple ID Settings.
    For even higher security, iMessage Contact Key Verification users can compare a contact verification code in person, on FaceTime, or through another secure call. They can also choose to create or edit a contact and save a public key to turn on iMessage Contact Key Verification with that person.
    All devices signed into your iCloud account must be on the minimum supported version of iOS 17.2 Beta, macOS 14.2 Beta, or watchOS 10.2 Beta. If you wish to keep using other devices on older versions of the OS, you will need to sign out of iMessage on these devices in order to enable contact key verification. (111356044)

The picker displays personal Moments that occur in someone’s life, such as their workouts and exercise, places they visit, a trip they take, a person they connect with, their photo memory highlights, Photos in their library, a song or podcast they listen to. Only suggestions explicitly added by the user will be shared with an app. If your app donates activities or interactions to SiriKit or CallKit or if someone authorizes your app to save data to HealthKit, some data might show up as part of Journaling Suggestions. • Fixed an issue where a scrollable chart did not respect the initial non-zero binding value passed to chartScrollPosition. (114889276)

SwiftUI

New Features

  • Use _logChanges() to log causes of SwiftUI view updates.
    Call the new debugging method _logChanges() in the body of a SwiftUI view to log information about why the system is updating the view. For example:
    struct MyView: View {
    var body: some View {
    #if DEBUG
    let _ = Self._logChanges()
    #endif
    // … rest of view body …
    }
    }

    As well as the physical property names, “@self” marks that the view value itself has changed, and “@identity” marks that the identity of the view has changed (that is, that the persistent data associated with the view has been recycled for a new instance of the same type).
    The new _logChanges() method is like the existing _printChanges() one, except that the new method uses the system console, which is useful in some debugging workflows.
    Calls to _logChanges() log at the info level to the “com.apple.SwiftUI” subsystem with the category “Changed Body Properties”. (113352555)

Resolved Issues

  • Fixed: Resolved a possible Swift access conflict crash that could occur with toolbar items. (113992797)

Known Issues

  • To prevent unintentional implicit dependency cycles, ImageRenderer no longer sends Observable updates when the image it produces changes. This change does not affect the behavior when a dependency is explicitly declared by observing the ImageRenderer’s publisher. (116836341)

WidgetKit

Known Issues

  • In widgets Text(_:style:) does not animate its content by default. (107582710)
    Workaround: To explicitly request an animation, use the View.contentTransition(_:) modifier.

I thought most people used social media for their journaling. At least I see a lot of people puking about their day with details that are completely irrelevant in life.

hopefully this fixes searching and the keyboard not showing. Never realize how often I use that until it is broken.

edit: it's fixed.
