Apple today seeded the release candidate version of an upcoming tvOS 17.2 to developers for testing purposes, with the update coming a week after the release of the fourth tvOS 17.2 beta.

Registered developers are able to download the tvOS 17.2 update by opting in to the beta through the Settings app on the Apple TV. A registered developer account is required.

tvOS updates are often minor in scale compared to other operating system updates, focusing primarily on bug fixes and smaller improvements rather than notable outward-facing changes, but tvOS 17.2 introduces an overhauled Apple TV app.

The app now includes a sidebar that houses content from both Apple's services and streaming services that integrate with the tvOS Watch Now feature. There are dedicated sections for Search, Watch Now, ‌Apple TV+‌, MLS Season Pass, Sports, the Store, and the Library at the top of the sidebar, along with dedicated sections for streaming services like ABC, CBS, Comedy Central, Hulu, ESPN, Discovery, Peacock, Prime Video, and more.

You can click into each streaming service to see content that's available specifically on that service, and there's also a new My TV section that replaces "My Channels."

Finally the iTunes movies und tvshow apps are not working anymore. If you open them, they just link to the TV App. Pretty bad decision in my opinion. Used the two apps all the time.

tvOS 17.2 Release Candidate (21K364) - December 5, 2023

Apple Music

Resolved Issues

  • Fixed: The Favorite Songs playlist might take a while to appear on some iOS/iPadOS, watchOS, and tvOS devices. (117219873)

StoreKit

New Features

  • New pricing properties price, currency, and currencyCode are now available on Transaction. If an offer was applied to the transaction, a new property offer is available to see information about it (id, type, payment mode), as well as convenience properties offerID, offerType, and offerPaymentMode. (106650768)

Resolved Issues

  • Fixed: The StoreKit 2 Transaction properties price, currency, and Offer.paymentMode now have Optional types. (116592563)
  • Fixed: The StoreKit 2 Transaction properties price, currency, and Offer.paymentMode now have Optional types. (116809380)
  • Fixed an issue causing the refund request “Done” button to not dismiss the sheet when using StoreKit Testing in Xcode. (117482750)
  • Fixed an issue where StoreKit 2 deviceVerification was incorrect, which caused transaction verification to fail. (117689523) (FB13315344)

Swift Charts

Resolved Issues

  • Fixed an issue where a scrollable chart did not respect the initial non-zero binding value passed to chartScrollPosition. (114889276)

SwiftUI

New Features

  • Use _logChanges() to log causes of SwiftUI view updates.
    Call the new debugging method _logChanges() in the body of a SwiftUI view to log information about why the system is updating the view. For example:
    struct MyView: View {
    var body: some View {
    #if DEBUG
    let _ = Self._logChanges()
    #endif
    // … rest of view body …
    }
    }

    As well as the physical property names, “@self” marks that the view value itself has changed, and “@identity” marks that the identity of the view has changed (that is, that the persistent data associated with the view has been recycled for a new instance of the same type).
    The new _logChanges() method is like the existing _printChanges() one, except that the new method uses the system console, which is useful in some debugging workflows.
    Calls to _logChanges() log at the info level to the “com.apple.SwiftUI” subsystem with the category “Changed Body Properties”. (113352555)

Resolved Issues

  • Fixed: Resolved a possible Swift access conflict crash that could occur with toolbar items. (113992797)
  • Fixed: To prevent unintentional implicit dependency cycles, ImageRenderer no longer sends Observable updates when the image it produces changes. This change does not affect the behavior when a dependency is explicitly declared by observing the ImageRenderer’s publisher. (116836341)

Hopefully the voice search option in YouTube will be fixed. Before, you could go into the YouTube app and use the Siri remote to search by voice. Now, when you press the Siri remote it activates Siri so you have to say that you want it specifically to search the YouTube app for whatever content you're looking for, and that doesn't always work reliably either.

Have they revamped the store section in the TV app? Currently it is not possible to purchase certain items from the iTunes store (e.g. complete series TV show bundles) in the TV app. The TV Shows app is the only way to purchase them on the Apple TV.

I thought this also but apparently you can by long pressing on one of the seasons available for purchase first

Hm, doesn't work for me. I don't see the "press and hold for 3 versions" thing in GoT. Also tried a few other shows that have complete series bundles and it didn't work for them either. Or are these images from the 17.2 beta?

Not sure, someone else posted that

I don't know if this is an ATV thing or a MAX app thing, but does anyone else find that MAX turns on subtitles itself all the time?

I haven't noticed subtitles being on multiple streaming apps normally with ATV usage such as the latest 4K model, so it must be a MAX app issue. But I am not a Max subscriber to verify. Periodically Max app sees updates, like one very recently.
