Apple had a bumper month for iPhone sales in China in October, with sales jumping 37% compared to a year earlier on strong demand for iPhone 17 models, according to data from research firm Counterpoint.

One in every four smartphones sold in the country for the month was an iPhone – a market share milestone Apple hasn't achieved since 2022, when there were fewer rivals in the premium segment. The iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Pro, and iPhone 17 Pro Max reached mid-to-high double-digit percentage growth, led by the standard iPhone 17.

New iPhone models accounted for more than 80% of Apple's unit sales, Counterpoint senior analyst Ivan Lam said. It is the best ever start to a December quarter for Apple, far surpassing its previous peak in October 2021.

"There is always some risk, especially with the much-expected Huawei Mate 80 series launching on November 25," said Lam. "But there's a lot of momentum behind Apple at this point. There is not much tapering to indicate a steep drop off."

China's overall smartphone sell-through grew 8% year-over-year in October, thanks to the performance of Apple's iPhone 17 series as well as that of domestic manufacturers like Xiaomi, which climbed to the number 2 spot for the first time in over a decade.

The data paints a rosy picture for Apple in the Chinese market, despite reports of a lukewarm reception for the iPhone Air, which has also performed poorly in other markets.

This is great, and I have a iPhone 17 as well and love it. It's the best iPhone produced IMO with a balance of form, features and price.

The issue is Apple's strategy with the intorduction of the Air, and the price hike on the Pro, was to increase the average spend on the iPhone. But it seems the regular model is taking in even more sales this year, for the same price.

The vanilla iPhone 17 is the iPhone to get. I absolutely love mine.

The Pro if you want the superior camera.

The Pro Max if you want the larger screen, superior camera, and extra battery life.

The Air if you want something super thin and light in-hand and in-pocket.

I'm trying out the 17 Pro from the 13 Pro Max during this extended return period. I like it but it feels heavy after a while. I might have to switch to a 17, felt a lot lighter in the store. My work phone is a 15 and it's a lot easier to use one handed.

They should go back to offering only two iPhones (pro and non pro) with the best features. The 17 is the prove that it works. Why deliberately limit a product to sell more expensive models? A crippled 16e and Air are redundant, and customers aren't stupid. I just don't understand why Apple doesn't get it. Steve Jobs gave them the blueprint. It's no coincidence that iPad sales were highest when there was only one model. Now we have six iPad models with three pencils, multiple keyboards and sales are low. Instead of going to Apple and say I want THE iPhone or THE iPad as costumer you have to go through the price ladder of crippled iPhones and iPads. They probably thought more models equals more sales but only the Pro sold well over the years because choice paralysis.

Not at all surprised. The base model 17 is a great iPhone and definitely it is the best base model in years. Think the sales of 17 will help Apple not only in China but across the world. With holiday season approaching, the base models will continue to sell well.
