Apple has shared a new action-packed film called "Huracán Ramírez vs. La Piñata Enchilada" on its YouTube channel as part of its Shot on iPhone series. The 13-minute video, filmed by acclaimed director couple Tania Verduzco and Adrián Pérez, also known as "Los Pérez," was shot entirely on the iPhone 14 Pro with the use of additional accessories and software.

The film retells the fortunes of Lucha Libre legend Huracán Ramírez, who is forced to come out of wrestling retirement to defeat an evil piñata that is terrorizing all of Mexico. The monster is unwittingly created by a boy when he uses extra spicy chili powder as a replacement for sugar during the piñata-making process, bringing chaos to the country.

In addition, Apple has shared a video titled "The making of Huracán Ramírez vs. La Piñata Enchilada" to its YouTube channel, showing how Los Pérez set out to modernize the Mexican wrestler movie genre using iPhone 14 Pro.

Apple has partnered with film directors in the past to showcase the capabilities of its smartphones in professional film settings. The ‌iPhone 14 Pro‌ models feature a 48-megapixel Wide lens and offer a new Action Mode with smooth-looking video that ignores shaking, motion, and vibrations.

At this point though, customers interested in purchasing an iPhone 14 Pro should consider waiting for the iPhone 15 Pro, which is expected to launch in September. Various camera improvements are expected for the next iPhones, including an improved sensor from Sony and a periscope lens on the iPhone 15 Pro Max that will enable up to 5-6x optical zoom.

Haven't watched the 'making of' video yet but I'd be interested to know which $20,000+ cinema lenses they used just to add a little pop.

EDIT: Apparently none at all, just the phone. Looks good.

lol post production level is insane there .... 😀You could shoot it on a iPhone 7 and make it look good, and a good extra lens helps of course. Conveniently, they never turn comments on their videos. Wonder why ...

I got a $400 savings on an iPhone 14 pro.. so upgraded from std iPhone 12. Nice upgrade. Don't need to wait for the 15 Pro. I doubt new devices will be any cheaper.

Still have to get into the camera more, but the photos I have taken I am pleased with

It's indeed capable of delivering great results. However, you must be aware of its (at least that of the Camera app) bugs to produce the best possible footage. The two major problems are both in video mode and both happen when (even automatically!) switching lens.

1, if you force the phone to switch to macro mode (switching to the 0.5x camera) by just focusing to a subject near to the phone in 1x/3x mode, it'll most likely continue using the 0.5x camera behind the scenes even when it's no longer needed. Needless to say, simulating the 1x camera using the 0,5x produces absolutely horrible results. This has happened to me SEVERAL times and can only be avoided by explicitly disabling macro mode BEFORE starting to shoot.

2, it's hesitant to use the 3x lens, even when there's PLENTY of light. I very frequently have to switch back to using the 1x/2x lens (the latter is just a crop ofcourse) when I realize it didn't switch and then retry switching to 3x mode. It's a REAL PITA - if I can't stop recording because it's for example a live event to be fully recorded, I usually need two or even three times to switch to the 3x lens and then back to 1x/2x mode.

Fortunately, the phone's NOT switching to the 3x camera is easily spottable - if the image doesn't "jump" after fully zooming in, then, it hasn't switched.

Note: I haven't bothered with 3rd party apps as I have had bad past experience with them - they just couldn't make use of many of the features of the camera available in the Camera app.

EDIT: here are two Flickr albums showing the quality difference between the upscaled-1x and the real 3x camera:

I'm impressed that it's a perfectly solid, goofy little action movie all by itself, not knowing what it was shot with or why. It doesn't try to do any "Look, this was with a phone!" gimmicks, it just looks and feels like a regular, well-done short.

Watching the how-to was what made it technically impressive--at least at fullscreen laptop sizes, the pulled focus shots didn't even register as anything special, and I wouldn't have even guessed that the action running shot was done without a dolly or some kind of stabilization rig.

That also shows what makes this kind of marketing from Apple different from most competitors--it's not "Look at what our stuff can do!" It's "Look at this cool thing! By the way, it was made with our stuff, and if you look at the behind-the-scenes you can see how the stuff is cool because you don't even notice it's there."

I want to see a "Shot on iPhone 3G" showreel. I'm sure I remember a jailbreak app that would let you record video.
I had a jailbroken iPhone 1, so I also had video recording on that. Nooot too good by today's standards. Low framerate, but individual frames were surprisingly better looking than 3gp videos from other phones at the time.
