Apple today shared an "inside look" trailer for upcoming Apple TV+ movie "Greyhound" starring Tom Hanks. The trailer, narrated by Tom Hanks, explains some of the background of the Battle of the Atlantic that the movie explores.

"Greyhound" features Tom Hanks as George Krause, a career naval officer given command of Navy destroyer Greyhound during the Battle of the Atlantic. Krause fights his own self doubts and personal demons as he leads a convoy of Allied ships against German U-boats to prove that he belongs in command.

The screenplay for the movie was written by Tom Hanks and the film was meant to be released in theaters, but could not premiere because most theaters across the United States remain closed. Apple ultimately paid $70 million for the film, and it will see a premiere on Apple TV+.

"Greyhound" is the first Tom Hanks movie that has seen a straight to streaming release, which Hanks called "an absolute heartbreak" in an interview earlier this week. "I don't mean to make angry my Apple overlords," said Hanks, "but there is a difference in picture and sound quality."

Apple plans to release "Greyhound" on Friday, July 10. Apple will also debut drama series "Little Voice" and short-form sports docuseries "Greatness Code" on that date.

At the beginning of this video it says “An Apple Original Film”. Did Apple have anything to do with this film besides paying $$$ for the rights to it?

Hom Tanks is a great actor, one of my favorites along with Truise, Bitt, Tiddleston, and Bumberbatch.
Yes. He is my actual favorite actor. Apollo 13 and Saving Private Ryan are in my top 10 movies ever, and Forrest Gump is my favorite movie of all time. And I have watched every major movie he is in and loved most of them.

Netflix puts "original" on things with much less provocation! Netflix will call a show a "Netflix Original" even if it is airing in other countries on other streaming services.

Apple bought exclusive movie and streaming rights to this movie for the foreseeable future. It is most definitely an Apple Original Film.

Maybe they'll finally have a good movie..
Watch Banker and Beastie Boys story.

How many World War 2 movies do we need?!? This has been getting old years ago! Why can’t we have a „great“ movie (history speaking) about the Spaniards wiping out the civilization of Central America or Belgium, the Dutch (pick a Country really) Messing up Africa? Maybe a movie on how the whole slave trade started? Why always WW2. Pick a different war Hollywood 😴 there are so many other wars to learn from and to never repeat again

The movie theme is engaging. The first and only decent picture on TV+. But how are they gonna make up $100 million? Not to mention the money they wasted on nasty See and lousy other content. I wish Cook spent this much gratuitous income on new hardware and software efforts. If he really wanted to hemorrhage over a billion dollars he should have just Bought Disney like Jobs was going to and he’d have way better content for the money, and amusement parks ans hotels to integrate with iOS and devices.

Recent history is way more entertaining. Plus, Greatest generation.

A) Apple is sitting on $100 Billion cash. They don't need that money back.
B) The "first and only" decent picture on Apple TV+. Have you bothered to watch The Banker? It's the "first and (so far) only" decent picture on TV+ until this movie releases (and The Banker might still be better).

Not to mention Elephant Queen if you are in to nature docs. One of the best released in recent years.

I, for one, am ecstatic for this release. Early RT reviews have it at 74% which is not horrid.

Yep. I agree about Elephant Queen (and Beastie Boys, btw) being amazing as well. But The Banker was more recent and garnered universal critical and audience acclaim, and seems to have been more widely viewed. I figured I would prove my point with the strongest movie on TV+.

Wasn't a WWI movie nominated for best picture Oscar this year?

Also something that had one of the highest (if not the highest) human casualty impacts.

The answer to this question is actually, no they did not. It was produced by Tom Hanks' production company Playtone and Sony Pictures. Sony sold it to apple for 70 mil. Apple was not involved in any way with the movie until money changed hands. Yes Netflix does this too, but it doesn't make it right. If I buy a painting, that doesn't mean it is my original artwork.

Yes it was. And 1917 was, in my humble opinion, a better movie than Saving Private Ryan (which for me, is saying something).

As to the difference in sound quality and picture, I disagree. Once you take into account screaming kids, cell phones, sitting offset from the middle, people putting their feet on the back of your chair, etc, I have a better overall viewing experience at home, even if the audio stream is lossy.

Covid will take 10 years off the life of movie theaters. I think opening weekend for this movie will blow away expectations - I think generally speaking viewers are scraping the bottom of the barrel on novel viewing material. I've been waiting for Greyhound for a month and I haven't anticipated since the matrix.

In an interview to The Guardian, Hanks said that the move to streaming is “an absolute heartbreak. I don’t mean to make angry my Apple overlords, but there is a difference in picture and sound quality.” In addition to starring in the World War 2 drama, Hanks has also written it. His irritation at the situation seemed to extend to the publicity ‘tour’ as well. “The cruel whipmasters at Apple,” he said, had even dictated that his background for Zoom interviews be a solid wall. He said it made it look like he was in “a witness protection programme. But here I am, bowing to the needs of Apple TV.”

🤣🤪@Apple
