I imagine a lot of people use Growl? Why doesn't Apple just implement a similar app into OSX or just buy up the people at Growl and have them do it for OSX.

Seems obvious to me...or is it just me?

I've witnessed Apple's version of notifications, on both the iPhone (since dumped for a Droid X) and iPad. Please, let Growl's ownership remain exactly where it is-- or anywhere other than in Apple's hands!

Growl is open source under a BSD license. So, Apple could use some implementation of it by default without buying Growl.

I agree Apple should include a framework for system wide notifications based on Growl.

But, Growl does introduce some bugs with Java in Safari. Possibly due to Growl including a Java API to function with Java binaries?

Growl is good, but frankly Apple could do a lot better.

They could make positioning of alerts a lot better so that they could be in different places than just the four corners. The notifications could be interactive (you could put a buttons on an iTunes notification to skip the track or rate it or whatever; or for Mail to delete, archive or mark as spam). They could incorporate remote notifications for the iPhone (like who is calling your phone which Address Book used to do I think).

I'd be surprised if most Apple employees aren't running growl though.

Growl is quite horrid, and it seems to sneak into my system now and then bundled with apps.

Edit: Just checked it is even installed now... Again.

Growl is crap, all it does is display an ugly box with text on the screen.
Apple would be idiots to buy this.
