For those of you who have tried a 4K 120 or 144 Hz display with “looks like 1440p” resolution, do you notice any input lag or performance hit?

I’m in for a new monitor to pair with a M2 Air, 4K 120 Hz seems like the way to go. However, I would actually prefer a lower resolution if there is even a hint of lag or unresponsiveness in the UI.

What are your experiences?

I think you are talking about scaling 5K (looks like 1440p) down to 4K. That's the mode I use with my old Intel Macs. I don't think faster Apple Silicon Macs will have a problem with that.

Yes, exactly! I don’t think so either but I would like to hear from people who have tried it and especially with 120 or 144 hz :)
