The upcoming high-end Apple silicon Mac Pro will feature the same design as the 2019 model, with no user-upgradeable RAM given the all-on-chip architecture of Apple silicon.

In his latest Power On newsletter, Bloomberg's Mark Gurman has revealed that Apple's upcoming Mac Pro, which is the final product to make the transition to Apple silicon, will feature the same design as the current Mac Pro from 2019. Unlike the current Intel-based Mac Pro, the upcoming model will also not feature user-upgradeable RAM.

In another disappointment, the new Mac Pro will look identical to the 2019 model. It will also lack one key feature from the Intel version: user-upgradeable RAM. That's because the memory is tied directly to the M2 Ultra's motherboard. Still, there are two SSD storage slots and [spaces] for graphics, media, and networking cards.
Gurman has reported that Apple has canceled plans to release a higher-end model of the upcoming Mac Pro with 48 CPU cores and 152 GPU cores given its high cost and likely niche market.

Is this supposed to have double the cores of the Mac Studio?

If they release a lower end one that has the same cores as the higher end Mac Studio I wonder how much more it will be for a "cooler" looking case 🤔

It seems that Apple is going for cost-effective, rather than user-effective! Not everyone has the same needs for their box, yet Apple post-Steve doesn't seem to care, as long as they make money.

Thus, it doesn't surprise me that our organization is moving away from Apple products. Why spend the money on a handicapped product?

...This is a handicapped, overpriced product with a minimal upgrade path. Can you think of any better parallel than calling it Trashcan 2.0?
How do you know it's handicapped and overpriced?

I mean it might well be handicapped and overpriced, but at least it won't have cooling issues.

Why would the form factor be so large if it is basically a Mac Studio on steroids?
For multiple potential reasons:

- Cooling issues. Having multiple of these CPUs combined into one may result into a heat buildup that expotential to the increase of CPU die surface. So you need a better cooling solution. Take Mac Studio for comparison, how large that heatsink is. And now double or quadruple the CPU die size -> You will need some space to install some really effective bad ass quiet cooling

- Time restrictions: They just didn't have enough time to invent a better casing. And out of practicality - and maybe because current users are already using and daved the space for this form factor - they keep it.

Handicapped, because a Pro level machine has no ability to upgrade RAM, quite literally the most common user upgrade performed. Overpriced, because it's ****ing Apple. Of COURSE it'll be overpriced. I bought a 2019 Mac Pro, love it to death, and yet I can say it's absolutely overpriced.

Which leaves us with cooling issues. Unless the damn thing keeps my beer cold and my fries crisp, as long as the thing performs decently, I don't give a flaming toss about the thermals.

My point is you can find positives in almost anything if you squint hard enough, but I prefer to keep my eyes wide open - that way I can actually see what I'm looking at.

The quote from Gurmans letter is better stated on 9to5mac: ”
Gurman says the machine has two spare SSD slots, in addition to slots for graphics, media and networking.

So, if this is true (gpu!)the machine might be worth it. Personally I just need 128 ram and solid upgradable gpu that renders stuff in similar speeds as a PC.

I really do hope that there is an “extreme ” variant after all so even cpu bound loads that need more ram is catered for. 48 cores and 384 ram could be a world leading cpu perf workstation. A crown that would be cool to have for Apple. (Higher ST perf than all other high core count cpus)
