Haven't been able to install any Apple Software on my G4 for several months. I download, then after the install starts I get a message about installing or running "preflight script." I have no idea what that means. No help on Apple website. I read somewhere to install "Combo OSX." But I get the same message about preflight. Any ideas what this is all about? This just happened suddenly.

Definitely consider repairing your disk permissions from Disk Utility, or from your OS X restore disc 1, if you're able to, then try running updates. Like yourself, I couldn't find anything specific about "preflight script" and the Mac OS. As another consideration, archive and installing the system would be the next step.
