Apple today updated its Apple Sports app with several tweaks to improve the user experience, including at-a-glance standings on league pages, highlighting of goal scorers at the top of NHL game pages, and support for the upcoming Relegation Playoff in the German Bundesliga.

In addition to the feature changes, the Apple Sports app is now also promoting a new Sports Newsletter, allowing users to subscribe to a personalized weekday email newsletter with general sports news and items specific to the teams you follow. "The stories fans are talking about - plus, the latest updates on your favorite teams," reads the newsletter tagline.

Sports is one of four newsletters managed through Apple News, including a daily Good Morning newsletter to get your day started, a weekly Best of Apple News+ that shares "the week's most fascinating stories" as selected by Apple News editors, and a weekly Popular newsletter rounding up the most-read stories of the week.

Full release notes for the Apple Sports app update:
  • Two matches, one winner. Follow the Relegation Playoff to find out who keeps their place in the Bundesliga.
  • Standings are now available on league pages. See how your teams stack up at a glance.
  • Goal scorers are now highlighted at the top of every NHL game for faster and easier updates.
Launched in February 2024, the Apple Sports app shows scores, stats, standings, upcoming games, and more for a variety of leagues. The free app is currently available only on the iPhone in the United States, United Kingdom, and Canada.

Still the most featureless app that Apple produce. It tells you almost nothing about non-US sports. All free apps on the AppStore are way better.

As a very very casual sports observer, my main beef with this app is that it doesn't let you see much of anything until you follow leagues and teams. Last time I tried that, I ended up with my Apple TV barfing up "suggested games" on my home screen and had to do a bunch of stuff to get it to stop. I literally just want to check a score now and then, but like so many things these days it really wants "engagement".

That's a good point. You can't see any scores without following someone or something, which is pretty weird.

Speaking of weird, with the ESPN app, I can only see ALL of the sports scores on the Apple Watch app if I don't sign in to the ESPN app on my phone. Otherwise, it will only show me the scores of teams I have marked as Favorites.

I'm enjoying the app more than I expected. Updates pop up on my lock screen and in the dynamic island in real time, which was my primary goal. Sometimes they even beat the delay on the MLB.tv broadcasts.

I only follow MLB and NCAA Men's basketball and for those I'm finding it pretty good.

Same old. This is the company that wouldn’t bid for the RPL because they would only go for a product they release globally.
FotMob is 100x better than this for football.

I'd like an option to delay alert notifications by 5 minutes. Way too often get an alert about an MLB score minutes before I see it on "live" cable TV or streaming.
That really drives me nuts. With the various streaming services things are often delayed on the broadcasts. I end up just turning off the notifications for important games. The delay option would be great.
