Apple Store app no longer support on iOS 8

I launched the Apple Store app yesterday on my iPhone running iOS 8.4.1, and received a message that it now requires iOS 9. I hadn't performed an update recently, so this must be a back-end change. I wasn't able to access any features at all, so had no choice but to delete the app.

Was this announced somewhere and I missed it? Seems a little mean.
