Background:

I pre-ordered the iPhone 16 Pro last week for in-store pick up as well as in store trade in for my iPhone 15 Plus using PayPal.

Initially I had a pre-authorization charge of the full amount on my bank account but after 5 days or so, it just disappeared and was never actually charged.

Yesterday I went to the Apple Store at location X and the whole store was an overwhelmed and disorganized mess.

The somewhat new „Genius“ (are they still called that?) gave me the iPhone 16 Pro and then immediately started the Trade-In progress with the hardware check and all that. After they approved the whole trade-in value, I had to sign and received a receipt by e-mail.

At this point I was a little confused because I expected him to charge me the new iPhone first?

While I was waiting to get my screen protector on, I checked the website and it showed iPhone picked up, order completed or something like that. While I was waiting there, the guy came to me again to check something on the package of the iPhone and his handheld thingy but was like eh I guess it is fine? And I showed him the status I have online.

When I got home, I opened the receipt and noticed that it was only for the trade-in like I never got an invoice for the new iPhone 16 Pro.

Then last night I already got the money for the trade-in from Apple via PayPal on my bank account.

Weird right? I expected to be charged the full amount when I picked up the new iPhone and later on a charge back for the trade-in but the first part didn’t happen

Store I was in for the UK launch was the most disorganised and messy one I’ve been at. Assistant didn’t know anything about the iPhone upgrade program. Other said had to wait in store for an hour before being able to do it due stolen device protection being on (you can disable that in seconds via find my) then tried to charge me full price for upgrade.

I’m assuming most of the store staff were just brought in for the iPhone launch but something that usually took 10 minutes took over an hour
