Apple Store iPhone 5 In-store Activation

Hi,

What is your experience regarding activating your iPhone 5 when purchasing in an Apple Store? Do they make you activate before leaving the store?

The reason I ask is I am doing an upgrade switch on my AT&T family plan. I already stopped into an ATT store and they said they could do the upgrade switch no problem if I bring the phone in. However, if it is activated within the Apple Store, I will not be able to do this and my mom will lose the ability to lose her phone.

When I picked up my iPhone 5 last Thursday, I was told they had to activate AT&T phones in the Apple store.
