has anyone used it? Do they check whether your phone is carrier locked before taking your trade-in?

All they check is the condition of the phone. They look in the SIM card tray for water damage. I just traded in an iPhone 7 that is still on the AT&T Next plan for a SIM-free iPhone 8 Plus.
