Apple store job for a 17 year old

I am a student in my last year of high school and I'm really interested in computers and technology. A new apple store is opening near me on Saturday (Manhasset, NY), and I was wondering if there's a chance that they would hire me. I'm a "computer guy" - I did research this summer in Cornell University's Human-Computer Interaction Lab, and I love my iPhone, but I have no work experience, and I don't own a macbook (I have a crappy dell laptop, hoping to get a MBP soon).

Do I have a shot? What would be the best job to apply for (genius, inventory specialist, etc.)? If it doesn't work out, is there another tech-related job in Long Island, NY that you recommend I apply to?
 
Likely not much, more likely after you graduate HS ...

And the point above, they are hiring people with retail experience for the same money as you ... so the manager is more apt to hire someone who will need less training.

aka, mall job or some other sales floor job like even cough worst buy.

2. you did summer research at an Ivy and you want to work the retail side :confused:

i'd say just take it easy your last year. get a good GPA/SAT, shoot for a university that Apple recruits at and work for them in Cupertino later on.
If you are hell bent on working in a retail store then just apply when you're 18...just be warned...retail ain't most people's cup of tea.

In order to work at an Apple Genius Bar, all Geniuses go through extensive training at Apple's HQ in Cupertino, California. You cannot become a genius without doing so. Seeing as that you are entering your sr. year in high school at a high school in NY, going to Cupertino for a couple weeks worth of training isn't necessarily plausible. This would mean missing out on 2 entire weeks of school...

Your best shot would be retail, but even then, as was mentioned, you must be at least 18 years old and without any prior retail experience your shot at getting an Apple retail job is very unlikely. I don't mean to burst your bubble, it's just necessary to keep things in perspective so you won't have your hopes dashed in the near future.

Still, I have nothing to lose, so I thought I'd send my resume just for the hell of it. I submitted it Wednesday night (it clearly said at the top of the page that I'm a senior in high school), and didn't expect anything, but I just got an email inviting me to an apple hiring event next weekend!

You learn something new every day!

What is considered retail experience? Would 2-3 years working in a retail store restocking and pricing help me out?

I realize you guys probably won't know, but I'll give it a shot :)
 
Its a shame. My hopes was to get a job at my local mall apple store in a few months (age 16) to help raise cash for a car.

I have been a die hard apple user (airport,ipod,iphone,imac,macbook,macmini,peripherals and software) for the past 5 years, and according to my parents (not the kind to say "oh honey you'd be a wonderful *insert profession here*") I could suit the job as a Apple store concierge in highschool....

Is it an actual apple rule to not even consider minors?

I think it is also partly your inability to be flexible or how customers may consider someone so young working at any retail store. I don't know you and never will but I find it hard to believe any company will want to be represented by a 'kid'.

Can you even enter in to a legally enforceable contract at 16?

To OP: I live on Long Island too and was going to apply to the Manhasset store, but I decided I rather work in Manhattan. I applied to all 3 in Manhattan and the Roosevelt Field store ended up emailing me asking me to come in.
 
Since the thread was bumped, OP what happened, did they say no because you were under 18 or what?
 
Dont let these guys drag you down. If you want to work for apple but are not yet 18 go get a job working in best buy or something to gain some experience.

Once you are 18 you will have some sales and tech knowledge to put on your resume and will be ready to apply!
