Apple Store Pickup for At&t phone, do they need to open and activate?

They won't open the box, but they will activate the phone. Which deactivates whatever previous phone was on the line you used for the order. So if you want to sell it, or give it as a gift, you have to 1) get a new sim for your phone (or whatever phone you used to make the order) and 2) make sure that the new phone is not tied to your number anymore (I had to get AT&T to reverse the activation).
