I just called the 5th avenue store and asked if Apple is charging a restocking fee if the phone is returned within the 30 day trial period. The woman said they don't have that information, but she expects they will. I asked if they did for the previous iPhone launch and she said yes.
When I spoke with AT&T they said if it's returned within 3 days there is absolutely no charge and if returned within 30 days you pay the pro-rated amount used for the service and the activation charge (which seams very reasonable).
I realize that some people already use AT&T and/or wouldn't dream of returning the iPhone. I, however, am switching from Verizon and want to make sure I'm happy with the service (and the phone) before I commit for the next two years, so I will not be buying it from the Apple store.
Just wanted to let others know before they decide to wait in line at the Apple store.
