I am seeking opinions (a dangerous thing on the internet) on the computer desk I built. It is made of oak instead of maple and the color is a little darker due to the stain choice (it matches the rest of the wood in the house). This is solid oak and weighs around 75lbs.

Very nice! And staying true to the Apple store aesthetic, there's no chair! :p

Seriously, looks good, and it appears that you have managed all the cables out of sight underneath, too.

That's outstanding. It could do with a drawer or two, but it looks outstanding.

I'd like to get into furniture-making one day, but with all my TV-watching and internet forum visits, I don't know how I'd find the time....

As far as cables go, there is only the power to the display and the thunderbolt/power to the laptop. I didn't expect such a good response on here. I do have it for sale on Etsy. I also do custom furniture for friends. I might expand my ventures to cover my paintball and Apple habits.

They trademarked the layout of the store. As long as I don't try to open an electronics store that looks like the Apple Store, then I think I'm good. I hope. ArsTechnica Link

I think it is really beautifully made; I love desks made from solid wood, and oak is a lovely wood which gives a timeless, and classic look. Very well done.

I've built quite a few computer desks, in various styles, over the past twenty years.

Aesthetically, you've done a great job. From a usability/ergonomic perspective its generally a good idea to have the keyboard positioned 4-5" lower than the height of the monitor and/or (hand) writing work surface.

I realize this can be tough to do while maintaining the clean looks of the desk. I usually accomplish this with a life-out keyboard drawer/tray that is concealed when not in use, and only comes out when the user is sitting at the desk.

Using the dimension data from this site (image below) has worked well for me. The data is adjusted according to user height, for use with/without bifocals, sitting or standing, etc. The values are based on the 1988 Anthropometric Survey of the U.S. Army Personnel.

Be careful not to clone it too perfectly. Apple has a patent on the tables design. Truth.

Apple can not patent a table design. If so then IKEA would sue the crap out of Apple for
stealing the design concept from them.

I think you built a wonderful looking platform - but lets be honest - you built a table not a desk. :D

Looks VERY nice. I would have made it much wider and a little deeper to function better as a working desk. As Papanate jokingly stated, it's a very nice table.
