Starting early next week, Apple Stores and Apple Authorized Service Providers will gain access to a new AirPods Firmware Updater diagnostic tool for updating AirPods Pro to the latest firmware, according to an internal memo obtained by MacRumors.

The tool will allow technicians with access to Apple Service Toolkit 2 to download the latest firmware on a customer's AirPods Pro during repair appointments in certain scenarios, such as if one of the customer's left or right AirPods Pro failed to update, the customer is using a non-iOS device, or the customer received replacement AirPods Pro with a different firmware version than the AirPod and/or charging case still in their possession.

Apple lists the tool as being compatible with AirPods Pro with a wireless charging case or a MagSafe charging case. It's unclear if the tool will work with any other AirPods models, such as the recently released third-generation AirPods.

The tool is necessary because there is no manual way for customers to update the firmware on their AirPods. In general, AirPods connected to an iPhone or iPad should automatically update to the latest firmware after a fairly short period of time, and it may help to keep the AirPods in their charging case and connected to a power source.

As of now, the AirPods Firmware Updater will be for Apple's internal use only, with no indication that the tool will be released to the public. Twitter account @StellaFudge was first to share information about the tool earlier today.

What i need is a downgrade tool. This latest firmware update once again broke my ability to switch my airpods with deliberate intention across devices. Had a phone call come in today that i couldnt take on my phone because i couldnt move the connection from my MBP to my iPhone no matter how much i tried.

These things seriously have been a nightmare and im inclined to go back to wires after 6 months with them.

Or they could make it possible to just upgrade the from your iPhone or Mac… like every other device they sell. And if you’re using them on a non-Apple product, Apple could very easily create an app for the AirPods that lets you update them. This is just unnecessarily complicated.

Do you mean updating AirPod firmware in "unnecessarily complicated" ?

Yes, AirPods audio switching is unpredictable and difficult to execute. I’d say half of the experience is gone because of that.

Wires: They Just Work™

I didn’t even notice they got updated, so easy 🙂
Good comment. That’s what magical about the AirPods, and how easily they connect, and there’s been times before where I’ve had to manually trigger the software update, and found they were already updated. And for some users, they don’t even know how to find the update in settings, so Apple makes it that much easier for you.

The best advice I got about updating AirPods firmware on these forums was to just forget about it and let it do its thing. ? Before that I used to try all the usual tricks described here with plugging in/connecting, with a consistently random degree of success. My AP3 updated themselves to 4C165 at some point last night and my AP case was not connected to the power. Go figure. ??‍♂️

Maybe the tool can update firmware on the MagSafe chargers too (for those without Macs with USB-Cs) ??

And by tool, I mean this "AirPods Firmware Updater diagnostic tool", not Timmy Apple.

The folks in the marketing dept are getting paid millions to figure this out - “should we call it pro or not?”
I’ll leave it up to them. Man it’s a tough decision.
