Apple today confirmed that it will be permanently closing its store at The Mall at Partridge Creek in Clinton Township, a northern suburb of Detroit, Michigan.

Apple Partridge Creek

Apple did not provide a timeframe for the store's closure, but a source familiar with the matter told us that the location's final day of business will be in mid-August.

Apple's statement did not provide a specific reason for the closure, but local news outlet WDIV last year reported that The Mall at Partridge Creek had been sold in receivership and was struggling to retain tenants. Apple permanently closed its store at another dying mall in the Chicago suburb of Northbrook earlier this year.

Fortunately, there are two silver linings to this news.

First, Apple said that all affected retail employees at Apple Partridge Creek will have the opportunity to continue their roles with the company.

Second, Apple confirmed that its all-new store in Downtown Detroit will open later this year, so the company's total number of stores in Michigan will ultimately not change. Apple Somerset will continue to serve customers in Detroit's northern suburbs.

Apple's full statement, shared with MacRumors:
At Apple, we're committed to delivering an exceptional experience for all customers, and we're excited to open our new retail location in Downtown Detroit later this year. As we prepare to open, we will not continue our lease at Apple Partridge Creek, and all of our valued team members will have the opportunity to continue their roles with Apple. We've loved serving the Partridge Creek community for nearly 20 years, and look forward to welcoming our customers at our other stores in the Detroit metro area, including nearby Apple Somerset, as well as Apple.com and the Apple Store app.
Apple Partridge Creek opened in 2007.

This is the second Apple Store closure that we have reported on in as many days, with the other location set to close being Apple Hornsby in Australia.

Apple is one of the world's most successful companies, but even it is not immune to dying malls or declining areas, and it makes changes to its retail fleet as necessary. The company is still opening and remodeling stores in several countries, including the U.S., Spain, Sweden, Malaysia, South Korea, China, and others.

I live and frequent the Partridge Creek store. It’s always busy, like most Apple Stores. I don’t see how a store in downtown Detroit will be successful in the long run but one that’s always busy fails. Other than restaurants and nights of sporting events, the downtown area closes up before 8:00 on listings days. I’m guessing the cost of the rent went up. With the closure of a larger shopping center nearby, Partridge Creek mall is seeing a lot less vacancies. Good luck in an area where a Hard Rock Cafe had to close because of low traffic.

Apple's retail story has been amazing. But they can't save a dying mall or a withering area. That's a much MUCH larger problem, with tendrils of cause going in tons of directions.

Really wish Apple would build a store further north in Michigan, but I guess that's what we've got Best Buy for. I feel like they could build an Apple Store in Midland, or maybe Mount Pleasant, and have it do OK, but probably not well enough to make it worth it for them. Sucks to have to drive to Detroit to go to an actual Apple store though.

The one market I have been surprised Apple has not entered after all these years is Sioux Falls, SD. One of the fastest growing metro areas in the US. Major mall anchored by Dillards and Macy's run by Simon Properties. Strong local economy with a good income level that would draw in Apple users. Apple doesn't have stores in SD, ND, MT or WY and this feels like one of the best options to have a store in one of the last few states missing a store.

Oh no! That is where I got my iPhone 5S on launch day!
Honestly though, that location is a little odd considering we have one in Somerset.
And then Partridge Creek is a mostly outdoor shopping place may not be the best idea either.

Times change, fading retail in 2025 is a far cry from the scene in 2005.

Most areas can't support that many Apple Stores or prospering malls. And Apple was never going to have a store in a dying mall for very long.
Patridge Creek is buzzing, far from death. But it really doesn’t make sense to have a store there when Somerset is a better vibe.

Think the stores in malls close down due to less number of people visiting these stores and Apple is hence required to make some changes.

A store in Troy at Somerset is not the same. Macomb County losing its only Apple Store is not a good sign. Partridge Creek is practically a brand new mall built in the late 2000s- it’s the only mall in the county save Macomb Mall, which serves mainly as an Amazon return hub and storage area for their trucks as well as some discount retail.

I guess Apple doesn’t see Liberation Day and erratic tariffs reversing the downward trend in Macomb County - they’re happy to keep their three stores in Oakland, one in Detroit now, and zero in Macomb County.

A harbinger of things to come, unfortunately.

As someone whose primary apple store is (soon to be was) patridge creek they are literally 20 minutesish away from each other. A detroit location makes much more sense. Also somerset is a much higher-end/luxury mall (fits apples vibe a lot better), whereas partridge creek is an outdoorsy rustic mall.

Both are very successful and busy malls but having two apple stores that close with such a small population makes no sense.

Makes sense to me. The last (and only) time I went to Partridge Creek was to pick up my iPhone 5 I think. Meanwhile downtown Detroit has grown exponentially and got more trendy over that time.

Odd considering that area of Macomb county and to the North continues to grow. Yeah downtown is busy but what for- concert and sports fans aren’t going to be “ oh there’s an Apple Store, let’s go” Depending on location it’s pay a meter or $20 on a good day to park. I won’t expect lines on launch days for iPhones or the next new thing everyone will want.

Partridge Creek Mall is GROWING .

Apple cheaped out.

Somerset is a vibe but it is a PAIN IN THE ASS to go to especially for just an Apple Store visit. Parking problems and gangs of "folks" plague Somerset during holidays.

Will need to have Apple ship devices now. Sad.
