Apple stores progressing strangely

I must've missed the memo but I didn't know they "removed" the checkout counter at the stores (I assume it's international). I had to naively ask one of the blue shirts where it went and was directed to another blue shirt at a hidden drawer.

Sometimes, I'm having a hard time following the times...
