Recently built a PC after 20+yrs and wanted to see if using my Apple Studio Display (ASD) was a viable option. Searching for the topic online I found little or it lacked info so here's hoping search results pick up this thread for others. I've listed some relevant components for transparency.
Parts and Apps:
Motherboard - X870I AORUS PRO ICE (rev. 1.1) with USB4/DP onboard graphics supporting 40Gb/s. I believe the onboard graphics is crucial to ASD support...not sure if it will just work on a regular USB C port unless it meets TB3+ bandwidth specs.
GPU - AMD 9060XT (HDMI and Display Port)
DisplayPort to USB C Cable w/USB - Amazon Link for Cable I used when hooking up to the GPU display port. The USB allows for ASD audio.
Apple TB3/TB 4 - when using the motherboard USB4/DP it will do audio and video, no need for extra USB like the other cable.
Twinkle Tray - used to adjust brightness as that is not an option.
Mice & Keyboard - Logitech mouse and keyboard (Windows version)
Helpful website - https://merecivilian.com/apple-studio-display-on-windows/
Results:
Apple TB4 and onboard graphics - kinda worked when installing windows but flickered and eventually black screened presumably due to the motherboard drivers not being installed yet so I had to switch to display port to finish. However, once Windows was installed the full 5K resolution eventually showed up and provided audio, camera, and the ASD USB works without any drivers or apps. Brightness does not work so refer to Twinkly Tray.
Display Port on GPU - worked flawlessly and with the included USB cable you can plug into any random USB on the back. I was able to do everything the TB4 allowed me to do without the flickering issues pre-Windows install.
Conclusion:
The ASD is absolutely a realistic option and I could control the ASD audio from the keyboard. The only real future missing is True Tone but the helpful website as listed has an app recommendation which I didn't try. I would not hesitate to use the ASD with a Windows machine unless you want ALL the features (e.g. center stage).
