Today at an Apple Store I checked out the System Report page of the Studio Display speakers. It says it has 8 output channels.

I am quite surprised. I thought the Dolby Atmos effect was simulated with only 2 channels.

Interesting, mine is reported as below:

Studio Display Speakers:
Default Output Device: Yes
Default System Output Device: Yes
Manufacturer: Apple Inc.
Output Channels: 8
Current SampleRate: 44100
Transport: USB
Output Source: Default

But the Studio Display only has two-channel speakers right? Is the 8-channel audio get down mixed to 2?
Looks like 8 speakers, I just verified with dolby atoms track and I can see sound coming from different directions of speaker ( top/bottom -different points)

Apple says it has six speakers: four woofers and two tweeters. It is unlikely that they support more than 2 channels.
