Hi everyone,

I’m considering getting the rumored 2026 Apple Studio Display. However, when working from home it will be the primary monitor for the Windows laptop. I’m curious if there any real world issues with the current model as when pairing it with a non-Mac system.

Specifically, I’m wondering:
  • Display performance: How well does it work as a primary external display on Windows? Any scaling or resolution quirks?
  • Webcam quality: Does the built-in webcam perform well with Windows apps (Zoom, Teams, etc.)? Any driver issues or reduced functionality compared to macOS?
  • Audio: How do the built-in speakers and mic fare when connected to a Windows PC? Any compatibility weirdness or degraded quality?
  • Connectivity: Any issues with USB hub functionality or peripherals when plugged into a Windows laptop?
If you’ve used the Studio Display with a Windows machine, I’d really appreciate your honest feedback, both good and bad.

Thanks in advance!

I use a Studio Display with Windows.

Camera works, but no Center Stage. Unless there's a hack, display brightness is stuck at whatever level set by the lastM Mac connected to it. The mic, speakers and USB hub all work, but occasionally have glitches.

I'd personally recommend external camera, mic, and USB hub.

Most importantly, your Windows PC needs to support DisplayPort AltMode via USB-C.

I have one as well and it’s essentially all this. I’ll add that you can use the free app Twinkle Tray but the cable is the most important part as lots are not created equal. Here’s the one I use.

Given the price, and features and requirement for using windows, you may be better off with a non-apple monitor.

Apple uses LG display panels, so look at at their 5k monitors

Here's what RTINGS says about the ASD (left) and the LG 5k (right)

@maflynn "Apple uses LG display panels, so look at at their 5k monitors"

Which LG 5K monitor are you referring to? One of their extra-wide 5K2K ones?

Because the LG Ultrafine 5K (5120 × 2880) is even more Mac focussed than the ASD.

The ASD operated at 5K in USB-C mode (in a Windows compatible way), whereas the LG Ultrafine 5K only works at 4K using USB-C, and requires MacOS BootCamp dual-stream drivers to work at 5K using Thunderbolt 3 and Windows.

@maflynn "Which ever one you want that best fits your needs."

So, one that isn't 'Retina' as MacOS defines it. That's hardly an alternative to an ASD...

In other words one model doesn't fit your needs and the other will, so as I said earlier get the one that best fits your needs - its not rocket surgery.
